The value of patient perspectives in our development cannot be understated, and we are extremely grateful for our Public Patient Reference Group (PPRG), who are a significant influence on how we shape our technology to achieve maximum benefit for people affected the most—patients. Creating opportunities for members of the public to share their perspectives on our technology remains a consistent priority for us, and with that in mind, we are delighted to be inviting even more people to join our PPRG in Somerset! Hear from Jenny, a valued member of our PPRG: 💬 “As a member of the public and user of NHS services, I am interested in anything that has the potential to reduce suffering and save lives. I have lost friends and family members due to the late diagnosis of disease, and although I, myself, had a diagnosis of a cancer, I am lucky that it was treatable due to its early detection. I believe there is a lot of work that can be done to increase early detection of various diseases using the vast amounts of data available, and I believe the development of hepatoSIGHT™—by people embedded within the NHS, with the clinical, IMT, and internal NHS knowledge—is the best way forward. If this project is a success (which I believe is possible given the dedication and drive of the PHI founders), it should open the door to more uses of the system and, ultimately, prevent suffering, save lives, and save the NHS money in the long run. As a member of the PPRG I have learnt much about the function and diseases of the liver, as well as the challenges of research projects in the NHS.   • Barriers to early identification of liver disease in a primary care setting. Increasing pressure on primary care means they must prioritise their time effectively, yet, despite the rising incidence of chronic liver disease and liver cancer, the liver isn't always a top priority. What are the barriers to early detection in primary care? 👉 Silent or non-specific symptoms hinder early diagnosis because patients have no reason to seek care, and their doctors lack prompts to investigate further. 👉 Low awareness of liver risk factors among patients and healthcare providers results in missed opportunities for early intervention. 👉 Competing priorities for GPs mean they must prioritise urgent conditions over potentially mild or (currently) asymptomatic liver disease. 👉 One-off elevated liver function tests (LFTs) may not raise concern. However, tracking trends over time, which is often essential for diagnosis, is challenging with current systems. 👉 No systematic screening programmes exist for liver disease in primary care, creating a missed opportunity for identification before symptoms appear. 👉 Regional disparities in care pathways can lead to patients being lost in the system or facing referral delays. Early identification of liver disease enables timely interventions when they are most effective, and ensures care is provided in the most appropriate setting.   • Yesterday, The British Liver Trust published new findings highlighting the urgent need to improve the early detection of liver disease, both to prevent premature deaths and save the NHS money. This research was a follow-up cross-sectional survey, building on the initial survey conducted in 2020 and published in 2021. What did we find interesting? 👉 There has been an improvement in the coverage of comprehensive care pathways for liver disease since the original study in 2020. 👉 However, these pathways still only cover 36% of the UK, leaving a significant proportion of the country without effective systems for early detection. 👉 The majority of integrated care systems do not have a proactive method to identify liver disease, such as case-finding, which negatively impacts early intervention. 👉 The study highlighted areas of good practice, including our hepatoSIGHT™ case-finding technology, but stressed the need for these practices to be available nationwide. 🔗 Read the full results: https://lnkd.in/eui6GXS7 💡 Learn more about how we can help improve liver disease care pathways: https://lnkd.in/ejqpUiZF #Research #CarePathways #LiverDisease

  • Our mission is to end the late diagnosis of liver disease, which, if left unchecked, can progress to liver cancer. The driving force behind our technology development is patients and their unique stories. 💡 Initiatives like our Public and Patient Reference Group (PPRG) play a vital role in shaping our technology by providing valuable insights, feedback, and perspectives on improving patient care. 🗣 Understanding the patient's perspective is crucial for advancing care and enabling the early diagnosis of diseases like liver disease, which can help prevent the progression to liver cancer. 🩺 If undiagnosed, chronic liver disease can progress to liver cancer; however, lifestyle interventions and treatments can help prevent this. 🏥 When diagnosed early, liver cancer has a high five-year survival rate (70–90%) 1️⃣. However, 7 in 10 cases are currently diagnosed at a late stage 2️⃣.   • To celebrate the final day of Love Your Liver Awareness Month, we have one more liver health fact 👇 🧠 Did you know that a healthy liver is essential for a healthy brain? The liver doesn’t just play a vital role in digestion and detoxification – it also protects the brain by neutralising harmful substances in the bloodstream. However, when the liver is damaged and unable to function properly, toxins can accumulate in the blood and travel to the brain, leading to a condition called hepatic encephalopathy (HE). ❓ What is hepatic encephalopathy (HE)? HE refers to changes in brain function caused by a build-up of toxins in the bloodstream due to advanced liver disease, such as cirrhosis. It’s a major complication of chronic liver disease but can also occur suddenly in cases of acute liver failure. Early signs are confusion, forgetfulness, personality changes, poor judgment, and changes in sleep patterns. While severe symptoms can include slurred speech, extreme fatigue, seizures, or even coma. Treatment focuses on identifying and addressing triggers like dehydration or infection, as well as reducing toxin levels through medication.   • Liver disease is one of the fastest-growing causes of premature death in the UK, yet most cases go undiagnosed until it's too late. By the time symptoms appear, options for intervention are limited, and outcomes are significantly worse. 🍔 Metabolic liver disease (previously known as NAFLD/NASH): 👉Affects up to 1 in 3 adults in the UK, with 80% of cases undiagnosed. 👉 Strongly linked to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. 👉 On track to overtake alcohol as the leading cause of liver transplants. 🦠 Viral hepatitis (Hep B, C & D): 👉 >200,000 people in the UK are living with chronic hepatitis B or C. 👉 Many are unaware, increasing the risk of liver cancer and transmission. 👉 80-90% of HCV infections can be cured with antivirals once diagnosed. 🧬 Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC): 👉 A rare autoimmune liver disease, often misdiagnosed as fatigue or menopause. 👉 9 in 10 sufferers are women. 👉 Early treatment is effective, but only if detected in time. Liver disease is rarely symptomatic in its early stages. Opportunistic case-finding using existing data can risk stratify the population and help health systems target interventions where they're most needed.   • 💡 Did you know that the liver is the largest solid organ in your body? Weighing around 1.8kg in men and 1.3kg in women, the liver is about the size of a rugby ball and sits just below the diaphragm on the upper right side of your abdomen. If you place your right hand over your ribs, you’ll roughly cover its location. 🩸 The liver is a powerhouse organ, holding about 13% of your total blood supply – roughly one pint – at any given time. Its blood vessels and sinuses store and filter this blood, ensuring the body receives nutrient-rich, detoxified circulation. 🔬 The organ is divided into two main lobes, right and left, and further subdivided into 100,000 tiny lobules. These lobules contain hepatocytes – specialised cells responsible for processing nutrients and removing toxins. Astonishingly, every milligram of liver tissue contains 202,000 hepatocytes!   • 💡 Did you know the liver is the only solid organ in the human body that can regenerate? The liver’s ability to repair itself is extraordinary. Unlike other organs, which form permanent scars when damaged, the liver can replace damaged tissue with new cells. In fact, it can regrow to its full size even if up to 90% of it is removed! Here’s how liver regeneration works: 🔬 Normal liver cells, called hepatocytes, take on the job of replacing old or damaged cells, guided by complex signalling pathways. 🛡️ Liver cells in the middle zone of the liver’s functional units, called lobules, are perfectly positioned to kickstart regeneration, even after serious injury. But the liver isn’t invincible. Over time, excessive stress, like long-term liver diseases, can damage it beyond repair. Every year, thousands of people require liver transplants, but many don’t receive one in time due to a shortage of donor organs.   • The Patient Perspective ❤️🩹 Early detection of liver disease is vital to reducing its impact on patients, healthcare providers, and the NHS. At Predictive Health Intelligence, our innovative case-finding tool, hepatoSIGHT™, empowers clinicians to analyse historical medical data and identify individuals at risk of liver disease - often before symptoms arise. In a pilot with Somerset NHS Foundation Trust hepatoSIGHT™ was used to find people likely to have undiagnosed liver conditions. This is the story of one such participant. Nigel received a letter inviting him for a comprehensive liver health review after doctors noticed abnormal patterns in his previous blood test results. "When I received the letter from the hospital it was not really a surprise," says Nigel, who was hospitalised after a spell of arthritis in 2021. Additional tests, including an ultrasound and fibroscan, indicated high blood pressure and signs of steatotic liver disease. The findings were a wake-up call for Nigel and prompted him to make positive lifestyle changes, such as cutting down on alcohol. “The project is a good idea,” he says. “It’s already had an effect. I know I need to rethink my lifestyle, and this was a very helpful nudge with expert advice.” Now, Nigel urges other people to take up the same opportunity. “If you receive the letter, follow it up. You’ll get advice, and then it’s up to you to act on it. In my case, it flagged things up that I can now address.” This story is just one of many that highlight the power of proactive care.   • 🚨 80% of England lacks an effective pathway for the early detection of liver disease 🚨 This is the finding of an important study published yesterday in the British Journal of General Practice. We welcome this study and recognise the critical issues it highlights. Liver disease, unlike many other major diseases, continues to grow in both incidence and mortality. Since 2019, deaths have risen by a staggering 27%, now exceeding 12,000 annually in the UK. But it doesn’t have to be this way. With 90% of liver disease cases being preventable and most highly treatable if caught early, the challenge lies in detection. Symptoms often only appear in advanced stages, meaning that strategies like proactive case-finding could mean the difference between life and death, and we’re encouraged to see The British Liver Trust emphasising the need for case-finding in their recommendations. As Dr Helen Jarvis, Clinical Advisor for the British Liver Trust and lead author of the research, states: "This work points to the urgent need for a central directive to mandate regional health bodies to develop a locally agreed pathway of care for early detection and management of their populations at risk of liver disease."
