It was a pleasure to speak at the NICOLE conference in Bilbao last week. Ross Pollock and I shared a case study on the incorporation of circular economy principles during an ex-situ bio-remediation project. Driven by the strong desire of our client to deliver a truly sustainable remediation project, opportunities to adopt circularity principles were identified and embedded during the planning and procurement phases and then rolled-out in the form of 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 (𝗦𝗠𝗣𝘀) during the operational remediation phase. These SMPs were tracked and updated as necessary during the works. Their use led to: 📉 a reduction in emissions to air during the remediation phase; ♻ the use of locally sourced materials that would otherwise have been considered waste (>80% of resources used on the project were sourced within 10 km of the site); ♻ the re-use of existing site materials and infrastructure; 👨👩👧👦 the increased social performance of the project; and 🌍 zero off-site soil disposal / treatment. We had the benefit of time and client that actively encouraged a sustainable approach, but the truth is that - per the SuRF UK forum definition - SMPs are “𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦, 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘣𝘦 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭, 𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥/𝘰𝘳 𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦”. Our experience on this project tells us that this definition is accurate, and that clients, consultants and contractors have little reason not to identify and adopt SMPs through the course of a remediation project. When they're used, everybody wins. My thanks to those involved in the project who include: Alan Thomas Jack Stapeley Lotte L. Matthew Goldsmith Thomas Miles 👏🏼 More information on SMPs and their application can be found here: https://lnkd.in/e7W_Xg3p #sustainableremediation #circulareconomy #landrestoration #contaminatedland #remediation #bilbao #pinchos
