Friday reading alert 🔔 Our new report from Royal Academy of Engineering National Engineering Policy Centre on “Healthy, safe, sustainable buildings - maximising benefits in retrofit” is out We have particularly looked at the role of health and how this needs to be more effectively embedded in retrofit of homes and public buildings. Retrofit for net-zero can bring significant energy and health benefits including warmer environments in winter and lower emissions and improved air quality from low-carbon heating. However there are risks to including around overheating and inadequate ventilation if retrofit is not done properly. We make 5 recommendations in the report: 1. Health-Based Outcomes: Embed health outcomes in retrofit programmes, supported by public information campaigns. 2. Public Buildings Assessment: Large-scale assessment of health risks in public buildings to inform retrofit delivery. 3. Digital Passports for Buildings: Trial digital records for building performance and maintenance to support long-term management. 4. Training and Skills Development: Incorporate health into training for retrofit professionals. 5. Research and Development: Address knowledge gaps on long-term health impacts of indoor environments and integrate findings into policy and practice. It’s really important this is done now as we embark on the next phase of improving buildings. If we don’t get it right we risk locking in inadequate conditions for the next generations. A big thank you to all those involved with the report including the working group and wider colleagues from Royal Academy of Engineering, Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and CIBSE who fed in Shaun Fitzgerald Peter Guthrie Edith Blennerhassett Hywel Davies Colin Goodwin https://lnkd.in/eVQbJ6PG

Attending COP online provides wider access to negotiations for those who are unable to travel, while also saving on travel emissions 🌍💻 This year we had 8 delegates joining discussions online – but is attending online equal to being there in person? 📰 In a recent blog, Dr Rosario Michel-Villarreal discusses her involvement with COP29 Azerbaijan online. She explains how online engagement could be improved at future COPs to enable greater impact for delegates across the globe 👇 https://lnkd.in/eFvMS_mF 🌐 Another member of our COP29 online delegation, Catriona Flesher, shared her thoughts about joining side events and negotiations, with a focus on her PhD research area of Loss and Damage, from right here in Leeds! We're advertising a NERC funded YES•DTN PhD opportunity across the Schools of Earth & Environment and Chemistry at University of Leeds. If you like forests and atmospheric chemistry (and who doesn't?) - we have the project for you! https://lnkd.in/eBjdKjV5 - UK Government has committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2050. As well as reducing emissions substantially, this will require strengthening of the nation's carbon sinks, such as forests. - As well as taking up carbon, trees emit biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs; such as isoprene and monoterpenes) from their leaves. The mixture of BVOCs emitted by a tree varies between species but is also sensitive to environmental conditions such as temperature, carbon dioxide concentration, soil moisture and potentially to the species of tree that surround it. - In 2023, the University of Leeds planted over 60,000 trees at #GairWood in north Leeds. Using Gair Wood as a living laboratory, alongside other sites and laboratory measurements in the HIRAC chamber, you will explore the sensitivity of BVOC emissions from trees of different ages to their environmental conditions. #BVOCs #netzero #afforestation Jim McQuaid Paul Seakins LEAF Centre - University of Leeds; Panorama DTP

The climate impact of a hydrogen economy We welcome contributions to our session at the #EGU25 European Geosciences Union (EGU) to take place in Vienna & online 27 April - 2 May 2025. Molecular #hydrogen is gaining global attention as an alternative to fossil fuels, with the potential to significantly reduce #CO2emissions, other greenhouse gases, and air pollutants. Although hydrogen itself is not a greenhouse gas, its chemical oxidation can affect greenhouse gases like methane, ozone, and stratospheric water vapor. This session invites contributions aimed at enhancing our understanding of the hydrogen budget and the potential impacts of increased hydrogen use. Deadline for abstracts: 15 January 2025, 13:00 CET Abstract submission link and more info https://lnkd.in/dmgtScvB The sessions is convened by: ➡️ Maria Sand CICERO - Center for International Climate Research HYway Horizon Europe project Co-conveners: ➡️ David Stevenson The University of Edinburgh ➡️ Hannah Bryant The University of Edinburgh ➡️ Gunnar Myhre CICERO - Center for International Climate Research ➡️ Bill Collins University of Reading #hydrogeneconomy #CallForAbstracts #geosciences CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency hydra Project NHyRA
