Whilst working for Protect and Prepare (and the National Crime Agency (NCA)) in Abuja, Nigeria last week, Paul Burnham and I took the time to visit Richard Abrakson who is the President of Abuja Rugby club. The club gets together weekly and they play inside a secure compound at Jabi Life Camp. All manner of cultures, faiths, colours, sexes and ages come together here to play our sport of choice. With so little kit and rugby balls so old & shiny, I could have shaved in them. The atmosphere attitude and positivity was simply outstanding!!!! Rugby has the unique ability to break down cultural barriers by uniting players through shared values such as respect, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Regardless of language, nationality, or background, the game fosters a sense of camaraderie and mutual understanding. Its inclusive nature ensures everyone, from diverse communities to global regions, can connect through a common passion for the sport. Rugby’s emphasis on collaboration and integrity promotes cultural exchange, tolerance, and global unity, making it relevant and impactful anywhere in the world. The game’s universal appeal truly demonstrates its power to bring people together - I love it..!!! It also bought home the importance of doing the important things right back at home at Farnham Rugby Club - something that is every bit as important to us there... The kit/balls I intend doing something about (although not sure how just yet)? Any ideas appreciated... #RugbyUnites #GlobalRugby #BreakingBarriersThroughSport #englandrugby

So this last few weeks have been super-busy!! Way too much to post here in separate posts and so here are a two highlights - one for my perfectly formed company, Protect and Prepare Ltd, the second, for me personally. The first, a further fabulous week's work within the National Counter Terrorism Centre in Abuja, Nigeria working for the National Crime Agency (NCA) delivering a significant piece of work around the development of a Kidnap for Ransom Intelligence Fusion Cell. Paul Burnham, Tim Cutbill and I are still loving this journey in the knowledge we are still making a difference!! The second, watching so many young people driving themselves forward at Farnham Rugby Club last weekend! The Under 16 Girls were simply outstanding and in no small measure down to the dedication of people such as Jo Sweales, Gareth Parry, Sam Foskett (Section Lead) et al. Their passion and hard work combined with the girls commitment, dedication and desire is what underpins all we do and why we do it - outstanding!!! Add to that, the efforts of the Academy lads in their game together with their coaches Sam VOIGHT, Sean Uprichard, 🥝Richard Donoghue, Rorie Whybro and it made for a fabulous days entertainment!!! Young boys and girls play rugby for the excitement of teamwork, the challenge of physical activity, and the joy of being part of a community. Rugby fosters essential life lessons, such as respect for others, resilience in the face of adversity, and the value of teamwork. Through both victory and defeat, players learn sportsmanship, discipline, and the importance of hard work. These lessons go beyond the pitch, shaping confident, responsible individuals who understand the significance of collaboration and perseverance. Rugby truly develops character while building lifelong friendships. #RugbyForLife #YouthRugby #LifeSkillsThroughSport

      +2
  • The last 24 hours have been hugely positive for Protect and Prepare. Yesterday Paul Burnham and I delivered a workshop around Dynamic Lockdown and the issues associated with that at 40 Leadenhall. A fabulous group of people who clearly care not only about the safety and security of their staff but also of those organisations who are gradually now occupying this fabulous new building!! Then on to Liverpool to spend time with Craig Marsh, Urs Hauenstein, Sally Newnham, Stuart A. and Nicola McCullough at Liverpool Hope University to discuss a new and rather exciting programme (watch this space)!! Exciting times!!

  • Our recent Multi-Agency Tactical Command Course (accredited through Skills for Justice), for the West Midlands Local Resilience Forum (under the watchful eyes of both Steve Vincent & Luke Martin) highlighted once again, the importance of feedback in enhancing training effectiveness. Gathering feedback is a critical aspect of the training process, as it provides our instructors with insights into the relevance and impact of the course material and their delivery methods. Participants’ feedback from this last course underscored the value of our training, with one attendee describing it as a “fantastic opportunity to learn, develop relationships and grow during peace time.” Another emphasised the practical application of knowledge, noting, “The course is valuable for any partner agencies to work collaboratively enhancing knowledge, experience and understanding of tactical decision making at significant incidents.” Such testimonials confirm that the course met its objectives of preparing officials to handle complex multi-agency situations collaboratively and with a deeper understanding. Our feedback genuinely drives continuous improvement. For instance, knowing that both trainers were “excellent and knowledgeable,” as per Nick Platidis from Dudley Council, reassures us of the quality of instruction while encouraging maintenance and elevation of these standards. Incorporating this feedback ensures that future sessions remain responsive to the needs of professionals on the ground, ultimately enhancing their preparedness and response capabilities. This approach not only affirms the quality of our training offer but also aligns course development with the evolving demands of crisis management and emergency response. #EmergencyPreparedness #TacticalTraining #ResilienceForum

  • Tim Cutbill and I (Mark Scoular) are this week delivering our Skills for Justice accredited Multi-Agency Tactical Coordination Course at the West Midlands Fire Service HQ in Birmingham. The Tactical Coordinating Group (TCG) plays a crucial role in UK resilience by orchestrating multi-agency responses to emergencies and ensuring cohesive response and implementation across various agencies. The importance of the TCG is recognised by the West Midlands Local Resilience Forum’s investment in their Multi Agency Tactical Commanders. This investment is aimed at enhancing the capabilities of commanders to lead a TCG, effectively lead diverse teams and manage complex situations that require a coordinated emergency response. Supporting the significance of these efforts, statistics reveal that robust multi-agency coordination leads to a 30% faster response to emergencies, significantly mitigating impacts on communities (UK Emergency Preparedness). Moreover, regions with well-trained tactical commanders have seen up to a 25% increase in the efficiency of resource allocation during crises (National Resilience Strategy Report, 2023). This strategic emphasis on training and developing tactical commanders ensures that when crises occur, the response is swift, effective, and well-coordinated. The ability of these commanders to lead across agencies not only enhances operational efficiency but also builds stronger communities resilient to both natural and man-made disasters. Bravo West Midlands Local Resilience Forum...!! #UKResilience #MultiAgencyCoordination #EmergencyResponse #TacticalLeadership

'The deal struck with Mauritius does nothing to address the forced displacement of this population and does not take their wishes into consideration. What Mauritius has done is successful lawfare; creating a diplomatic problem to try to gain control over economically valuable territory that it wants to exploit' writes Jack Watling in the latest RUSI Commentary.

  • The headlines for Mass-Shootings are never going to read well? Devastation takes seconds. Entire families destroyed in the blink of an eye and communities devastated by cowardly extremists who clearly do not care.... The bloodshed in Alabama marked the third high-profile mass shooting in as many weeks in southern US, following separate outbreaks of deadly gun violence in Tennessee and Kentucky that prompted local leaders to call for tighter gun control measures. Dadeville itself was shaken by at least one prior mass shooting in August of 2016, when a gunman wounded five people during a party at an American Legion hall, according to the Montgomery Advertiser. Biden called the rising gun violence in the US “outrageous and unacceptable,” and urged the country’s Congress to pass laws to make firearms manufacturers more liable for gun violence, ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, and require safe storage of firearms and background checks for gun sales. Our thoughts are with you all....
