About us
ProVeg is an international food awareness organisation with offices and representations in the UK, China, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Poland, South Africa and the US School Plates is ProVeg UK’s flagship programme to help school meals to become healthier and more sustainable. We work with local authorities, multi-academy trusts, catering companies and individual schools offering a range of different services to increase the uptake of existing vegetarian meals and to increase the quantity of plant-based food available in schools. We focus on small, easy-to-implement changes, and, as a non-profit organisation, all our services are completely free of charge. We offer: -Menu review and advice to increase the uptake of existing vegetarian options. -New meal suggestions & new recipes (all nutritionally balanced & delicious). -Help to introduce meat-free days, as well as educational planet-themed days. Bespoke webinars to explain the principles of School Plates and how to apply them. -In-person plant-based cooking training for groups of caterers & development chefs. -Help to analyse the environmental impact of your menu changes, including climate emissions savings. We LOVE to see this. 👏🌿 This week we were at Upper Shirley High with the wonderful Dolce Schools Catering team hosting our Plant-based Cooking in Schools workshop. The chefs got stuck in to cooking some of our School Plates recipes, and we had some fantastic feedback, like this! We want catering teams to feel empowered to be able to experiment with plant-based ingredients, and show them new ways of making some classic school dishes that are healthier and more sustainable. 🌟 A highlight - from our initial survey on plant-based food at the start of the session, we heard, 'I've never really bought into it, however willing to try anything new, and it looks really encouraging, fresh & vibrant" versus after our workshop... "Totally changed my concept, love the dishes especially the noodles". Wonderful! Non-profit organisation ProVeg UK has shared the results of their first ever School Contract Caterer Ranking with Dolce Catering coming top of the list for their planet-friendly menu. 🌍 The ranking scored England’s top 25 school caterers on how planet-friendly their menus are. ProVeg says that this year’s winner Dolce Schools Catering proves that sustainability and efficiency go hand-in-hand, even for the biggest in the business. Dolce caters for more than 650 schools. Their menu included roasted ratatouille pasta, southern style jambalaya and plant-based sausages with mash. They have two planet-friendly days in the schools where they have contracts. Sodexo and Caterlink came second and third with their range of planet-friendly offerings. ProVeg says these caterers are paving the way for healthy and sustainable school menus to be the norm. The nutritional profile of plant-based milks - ProVeg International's research team share some of the latest findings from our 'Building bridges between habit and health' report. 🧠 While plant-based milk alternatives often have less fat and saturated fat than cow’s milk, fortification (adding extra minerals and vitamins) can make all the difference in their nutritional value. Here are key insights from our analysis: 🌿 In countries like Belgium, Italy, and the Netherlands, fortified plant-based milks achieve top scores (7–7.7 out of 9) for their nutritional value. 🌿Soya milk stands out, matching or surpassing cow’s milk in protein content and offering significantly less saturated fat. 🌿 Fortified plant-based milk can rival cow’s milk in calcium and vitamin D levels, with the US leading in fortification practices.
