Sat on the train today reviewing how much life has changed. Today I'm heading to the Salesforce user group in Leeds. This an excellent network meeting opportunity to meet others in the ecosystem and it is very much the way I'm making connections to generate sales leads. For me, having worked in sales for nearly 30, years it has always been about who you know. People buy from people. In my first sales role it was all about telesales, indiscriminate cold calling before the days of telephone preference service. That was hard slog, but that was the norm in the industry I was in. Fast forward 10 years and I was on the road, visiting clients and potential clients, mainly with appointments. Clients wanted to talk with me, they were interested in our products and services. Days were long, mileage was high but I loved it. I enjoy meeting people, the personal interaction. Forward again to pre-Covid and I was still on the road, but this time cold call sales, knocking on doors, walking the streets selling into retail and hospitality. Completely different sales strategy, good results overall but gruelling at times. Out in all weathers, often in evening when clients were open, it was hard. But the remuneration was good - hence I kept it up. Covid hit hard with retail and hospitality and I lost out - they were my main market. So back into the job market, and now I work from home for the best company Ive ever worked for (shout out for the team at ProvenWorks, Im a keyboard warrior, sales almost entirely over email with the occasional Zoom call. Yes, its completely different to what I've done before, but yes, I still enjoy sales! And as for then prersonal interaction - I get my regular fix for this! 2 or 3 user groups a month get me out of the office and out seeing people!
