The class recently welcomed Brian Morrison where he provided professional headshots for students, helping them elevate their personal branding. He also shared insights from his impressive career as a press photographer, which spans over 20 years, offering students a glimpse into the world of professional photography and journalism. During his session, Brian reflected on how the industry has transformed—from the traditional days of PR and newspapers to the rise of social media. In this week’s class she covered Internal Communications 💬 The class explored effective ways to connect with internal teams—newsletters, emails, and those all-important “watercooler” moments. They discussed the power of positive communication, especially when navigating tough situations that require careful messaging to staff. The class also touched on the importance of public speaking—a skill that can be challenging for many. As a fun moment, Grainne shared a video of her 5-year-old son’s reaction to seeing himself speak in public. Turns out, even kids aren’t always thrilled about it! Gráinne McGarvey has been delivering the Critical Perspectives in PR course at Ulster University for final-year students and this week we covered Media Relations. She had the opportunity to welcome Clodagh Rice, Business Correspondent for BBC Northern Ireland. Clodagh gave an insider look into the journey of a press release, from its arrival with her to its path through TV, radio, and digital. Her tips on matching PR content to the right media platform, creating visuals for TV, and prepping clients for interviews were invaluable! 🎥✨ The students were asking insightful questions and exploring the unique (and sometimes tricky!) dynamic between PR and journalism. We covered why PR needs the media – and why the media needs us – and the importance of building strong media relationships. This week, the class explored the PR strategic process, why companies need a well-defined strategy, the pitfalls of not having one, how tactics fall flat without proper planning, and the importance of setting realistic objectives for success. They reflected on current news, including BBC scandals and the latest media storm in Northern Irish politics. 📺💥 They even touched on Ofcom's report revealing that 16-24 year-olds are watching less than an hour of live TV a day - not that surprising?
