Doing Small - Building Big, Ethical Business loans for Entrepreneurs struggling to get funding from anywhere else.
About us
Purple Shoots is a Charity and a Licensed not-for-profit microfinance organisation, set up to tackle unemployment and economic problems in the areas where it operates. Our goal is to improve the situation of people on a lasting basis, and to give opportunity and dignity to those unable to find work. This will help the poorest communities, encouraging independence and small business. Purple Shoots will offer small loans at fair rates to those who are unable to obtain a little support from elsewhere. We will help develop their business ideas and their business skills, to help set up and grow their own small businesses. We realise that small businesses are very important to communities in Wales. Purple Shoots will try to help in 3 ways: 1. By helping people we will build confidence in people who want to start their own business. 2. By lending just enough to get going we will also be helping the community they are from. 3. By giving advice and mentoring in the early days we will help make those small businesses successful and last longer. Purple Shoots will try to: Create small groups of potential new business owners (called self-reliant groups), encouraging them to develop a business idea and helping them put their plan together, before offering a start up loan. This is a key part of our business which will reach out to those struggling with unemployment and lack of opportunities. Offer straight forward small business loans to people starting out or already running a small business. Help the new business owner understand what is needed to get going properly so that a steady income for the business develops and the business lasts. As a charity, all our profits will be used for further lending and to help the aims of the company. Income will come from charging interest at a reasonable rate.

Just in a meeting with one of our church partners in a local cafe when someone came over to say hello - a person Purple Shoots funded 10 years ago who wanted to say "hi" -still running a successful business 10 years on, and seeking to support other people, who are where she was, to turn their lives around too. #microfinance #smallbusiness #local

A few weeks ago, Karen and Helen attended the Summit of the Future event organised by the Interfaith Council for Wales. It was a great evening discussing the future Wales we want to see with a mix of people from all faiths and how we as individuals and the faith community can enable us to get there. The event was rounded up by Jane Hutt, Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Trefyndd and Chief Whip.

We are so happy to be able to receive a grant of £27,000 from BCRS Business Loans! Whilst this doesn't solve the wider problem many SMEs face when it comes to financial backing, we welcome BCRS' commitment to supporting Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFIs) like us and look forward to putting this grant to use, creating an impact to those businesses in need that we support on a day to day basis! “We are extremely grateful for the support from BCRS, and this funding will enable us to positively impact those businesses that need it. We have such a great demand for our lending and rely on grants like this to help us meet it. We are hopeful that other organisations will see the impact and will be inspired to follow BCRS’ lead!” - Karen Davies

The need for grassroots finance remains strong. Here’s why your support matters⬇️ 🚧2024 wasn’t without its hurdles: For four months, we had to pause lending due to a shortage of funds. But the demand for our services never stopped. This highlights how critical ongoing support and investment are for grassroots finance. 🌱Purple Shoots is more than lending, it’s about hope and opportunity. We’re breaking barriers for those who need it most. But we can’t do it alone. 🤝With your support, we can help more entrepreneurs thrive in 2025. Together, we can ensure no one is left behind. GOOD NEWS STORY // 💗This week, we've been reminded of beautiful generosity that although it can be rare, does exist! 📞We had a call from one of our borrowers after false claims were made to the police about his van which resulted in it being impounded. At a loss of what to do, needing the van for work in order to earn money to get his van back but not having his van to do the work in the first place, he felt stuck and wanted us to speak to someone on his behalf. ❌ As an ex-offender, it seemed he was being treated with a level of bias towards him. After a conversation with an investor, it was concluded that this was a battle that we wouldn't win and regardless of how unjust the circumstances had been, the priority needed to be getting the van back. 💷Our investor anonymously gave us the money to give to our borrower to recover the van. 💪This is generosity that we don't often see or hear about but it is a beautiful reminder of the impact helping others can have.

I remember starting up my first business - many years ago! - and life would have been a lot easier if Purple Shoots had been around!
Rejection from traditional lenders DOES NOT mean the end of the road for your entrepreneurial dreams. 🚧Before approaching Purple Shoots, many borrowers faced roadblocks: 24% were rejected by lenders like The Start Up Loans Company (SULCo) 16% were turned down by multiple sources 45% didn't apply elsewhere due to lack of confident or access. Time and time again, we see the perseverance of our borrowers to make things happen and we're proud of our commitment to seeing potential where others do not.
