I picked up something interesting in our last project. Understanding and addressing hidden commitments can transform a company's strategy. Just like people, companies have hidden commitments—things they prioritize implicitly, diverting resources from their stated priorities. For example, I say I want to learn German, but I always end up prioritizing other things over practicing it. 🙂 A few weeks ago, we at Purpose House helped the 100% plant-based company THIS™ develop their new business strategy. After analyzing their key business facets, we worked with the leadership team to uncover the core strategy pillars and the key activities needed to get there. From the moment we stepped into their office, it was clear that their purpose of “forcing animals into retirement” came before all other commitments. Just see how peacefully Dandelion oversees us working on the strategy in the photo below 🤩 🐶 This priority ensured the business strategy developed together was a structured way to achieve the ambition set by their purpose. Not the other way around. Sometimes we work with leaders that are intrigued by purpose but tend to see it as a way to achieve another end (e.g., X% growth or penetration). Consciously or unconsciously, they have hidden commitments that eventually stopped them from reaching their declared ambition. To avoid this, the first step is to list all your actual business commitments. If you want to realise the power of your purpose, it must top that list. It sounds hard but it can be done.
