We are excited to introduce 'Scoping the "Maths Corps" in England', the second in our new series of reports exploring how to address systemic challenges and create opportunities to help more students excel in maths. Authored by Adam Schaffer, and created in partnership with XTX Markets, this report develops the idea of a ‘Maths Corps’ – the diverse network of people who have the potential to deliver or support maths education activities for young people. Key insights from this report include: 1️⃣ There is a Maths Corps of c. 600,000 potential educators in England, which is distributed nationally but with hotspots in London and the South East. 2️⃣Only about 20% of this Maths Corps is currently engaged in maths education, but there is potential to grow this significantly. 3️⃣ The Maths Corps comprises six main groups, with high priorities for engagement including university students, current and former teachers, and private tutors. This report is intended to spark questions and conversations about deploying the Maths Corps to give young people better access to maths excellence pathways. Read the full report via the link in the comments 👇 Stay tuned for more from our series as we continue to explore solutions for advancing maths education in England.

Celebrating Collaboration: A Day of Insight and Inspiration Last Tuesday, the Purposeful Ventures team were delighted to host a collaborative event for our Maths Excellence Fund delivery partners from across the nation. It was an inspiring day, filled with shared learning, open dialogue, and valuable connections. Attendees told us: 🤝 The event provided a fantastic opportunity to meet with other project teams, sharing challenges, ideas, and solutions. 📣 Hearing directly from each delivery partner about their approaches to programme delivery was both enlightening and reassuring. 💡 It was fascinating to learn about the diverse ways in which the programmes are being implemented, as well as to acknowledge the common challenges we face. 🤲 The willingness to share openly created a collaborative atmosphere where advice, support, and fresh ideas flowed freely. 🤗 Meeting in person added another dimension, enabling more informal conversations that further strengthened the bonds between partnerships, and with our independent evaluator National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER). 🥅 A great day to appreciate that we are a part of a bigger team all working toward the same goal. The afternoon’s facilitated discussions proved a particular highlight, encouraging open and honest exchanges that yielded meaningful insights for all involved. Thank you to all who attended for your engagement, honesty, and collaborative spirit. Together, we are making strides towards ensuring every student has the opportunity to realise their full potential in maths. Here's to many more events like this! 🌟 Co-op Academies Trust, United Learning, MEI, Inspiration Trust, University of East Anglia

This is such important research to share the current reality in music and the arts as well as being a useful read for us as we embark on our work in this sector. Thank you The Sutton Trust. Young people from all backgrounds should have the opportunity to reach their full potential in music and the arts. This report exposes the inequality in access to the most prestigious creative institutions and courses, highlighting how much work there is to be done to create a fairer society, where all young people can thrive in their chosen discipline. While sobering, this is helpful food for thought as we work out where we can make the greatest impact. Watch this space...
🚨 How elitist are the creative industries? 🚨 Our new research uncovers stark inequalities in access to careers in the creative industries, including television, film, and music. It finds that those from upper-middle-class backgrounds, and the privately-educated, are significantly overrepresented in the creative professions in the UK. TV and film particularly offers an opportunity to represent the lives and experiences of people from different backgrounds, but access to the top of this profession is not equal. We found that 1 in 3 (35%) BAFTA-nominated actors were educated privately 🎭 There is a similar picture in classical music, which is a particularly elitist profession. 43% of top classical musicians were privately educated. This compares to 8% of pop stars, an area that better reflects the education background of the UK population as a whole. University is a vital stepping stone for many going into a creative career. But access to creative degrees in subjects such as Music and Art is skewed towards those from upper-middle-class backgrounds, especially at the most prestigious institutions. This class divide is also present in specialist institutions, such as conservatoires and universities specialising in performing arts. Over half of those studying creative subjects at the Royal Academy of Music (60%) and the Royal College of Music (56%) were educated privately. This research shows that someone’s class background has a huge impact on their ability to succeed in the creative industries. It also underscores the need for equal access to higher education for all young people. Read the full report ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/ey_amV_N

Yesterday I went on a literal and metaphorical field trip, visiting Jake Curtis and the brilliant team at Jamie's Farm, as part of our work at Purposeful Ventures. On a beautiful sunny day, Sophie Humphreys OBE, Ellena Hyeji Joo and I visited their Bath Farm in rural Wiltshire to understand the transformative impact of their short-term residential programmes on children leaving them better equipped to thrive emotionally, socially and academically. We left fired up with ideas and inspired by the team, location and the work they're doing.

A Secure Children's Home provides specialist, tailored care for children with complex needs, bringing together residential care, educational facilities and healthcare provision under one roof. Children are often placed there to protect themselves and others from the high risk they represent. As part of our work at Purposeful Ventures to understand this sector, Sophie Humphreys OBE, Ellena Hyeji Joo and I headed to Wigan yesterday to visit Nugent's Marydale Lodge - the only Secure Children's Home run by a charity. A big thank you to their wonderful Residential Manager Andrea Marshall who was so generous with her time and insights, and to the whole staff team for welcoming us to the home.
