Fundraising Champions 2024! We take part in the annual The Rose Road Association team triathlon event which is always a fun afternoon with a lot of vital funds raised. We were able to raise almost £3,000 for this wonderful charity, with the total amount almost £10,000! Thank you to everyone who donated, we'll be back next month to compete again! 🏃♂️ 🚴♂️ 🏊

Tackling the Autumn Budget outcomes 💼 In this issue… Rachel Reeves’s Autumn Budget, the first of the new Labour government, pointedly avoided direct tax increases on individuals. However, increased employer NICs for 2025/25 are likely to test already stretched profit margins for many businesses. Additional hikes to capital gains tax, and the extension of the reach of inheritance tax, will affect business owners and others who do not consider themselves particularly wealthy. If the latest legislation has left you concerned about your estate and legacy, transferring assets to your spouse or civil partner may be enough to mitigate potential liabilities. With the prospect of reaching 100 years old forecast to treble within the next 25 years, funding care in later years will become an issue for more and more people. One thing everyone can do to prepare for retirement is ensure you have topped up any gaps in your national insurance record as much as you are able. Autumn Budget 2024 💼 In presenting Labour’s widely anticipated first Budget in 14 years, Chancellor Rachel Reeves was faced with a challenging task. Following her announcement of a “black hole” in the public finances, the need to renew the Treasury’s coffers while maintaining Labour’s manifesto promises seemed a tall order. Ms Reeves outlined a programme of around £41 billion worth of tax increases over the next five years, alongside plans to rebuild tottering infrastructure, the health service, schools and more. Any idea of a return to austerity was quashed, but how this will be achieved is very much in the detail. Among the key headline items were: 👉 The main rate of class 1 employer national insurance contribution (NIC) will be increased from 13.8% to 15% from 6 April 2025. 👉 The secondary threshold at which employer NICs are payable will be reduced from £9,100 to £5,000. 👉 Main rates of capital gains tax increases with immediate effect to 18% for non and basic rate taxpayers and 24% for higher and additional rate taxpayers. 👉 Inheritance tax (IHT) business and agricultural reliefs will be capped at a total of £1 million from April 2026. 👉 Unused pension funds and death benefits will be included as part of an individual’s estate for IHT purposes from April 2027. 👉 The additional Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) charge for second homes and buy-to-let properties increases from 3% to 5% from 31 October 2024. 👉 VAT of 20% will be applied to private school and boarding fees from 1 January 2025, while the charitable relief for English business rates will be withdrawn from 1 April 2025. 👉 ISAs, Junior ISAs and Lifetime ISA limits will remain frozen until April 2030. 👉 Fuel duty rates for 2025/26 will remain frozen and alcohol rates on certain draught beers will be cut. As ever, the Budget publications contained a wide range of detailed proposals and much to digest. Saving for retirement 🌎 The value in thinking ahead... Retirement is something most of us look forward to − particularly on a Monday morning. However, those thoughts are often little more than a whimsical cocktail of not having to work and prolonged holidays. The reality could be rather different. For a start, retirement has increasingly become a gradual process, with part-time work often playing an important role. The latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that 14.9% of men and 8.7% of women aged 65 and over are still in employment. Ensuring you have enough to live on in retirement isn’t straightforward. In a report published earlier this year updated calculations from the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association showed that a couple who wish to enjoy a moderate standard of living in retirement now need a net annual income of £43,100 (£44,900 in London). An amazing effort! 🚶♂️ Ahead of our Walk the Test Way event this weekend, a few of our advisers completed the full challenge a week early due to other commitments.
