I’m really pleased to share a thought-provoking paper from Which?, the UK consumer champions, on "Building Consumer Trust in Smart Data." This report explores the immense potential of smart data while emphasising the critical need for consumer trust to ensure its success. Key Insights: 💡 Unlocking Potential: Smart data can significantly enhance various sectors, potentially boosting the UK economy by £27.8 billion through improved services and competition. ✅ Trust is Essential: For consumers to engage with smart data services, they must feel confident that their information is secure and used responsibly. This cannot just be lip-service, there needs to be core infrastructure (either nationally and/or in each business) to enable: 🚀 Frameworks for Trust: The paper proposes a comprehensive trust framework that prioritises consumer control and consent, ensuring robust governance and protection against misuse and bad actors. I want to extend my gratitude to the Which? team for including my views. This is an important call to action for all UK businesses. That’s a wrap for work travel in 2024 and what a blessing that it ends in Qatar 🇶🇦 The timing was perfect as the Emir was in the UK on a State Visit, signing a massive fintech deal 🎉 After spending nearly a week there, the future is looking bright: ⚖️ Qatar is making significant regulatory progress in the fintech space. Digital bank regulation was published this week and the recent digital assets framework are both testament to that. Open banking regulation is expected to be forthcoming ⏱️Qatar is more measured in its approach to fintech than its GCC neighbours, taking the time to assess what is appropriate for the market and ensuring both legislative frameworks as well as products and services are relevant 🗺️ There is a growth agenda of both homegrown fintechs but also creating conditions for international fintechs to expand and thrive in Qatar 📱 Digital payments are well served but this is a space that is still a key area of interest for fintechs 🤔 Investment & funding, regulatory clarity and compliance, as well as developing partnerships within the ecosystem are identified as key challenges 🚀 The drive and desire to stimulate fintech growth runs deep.
