“I have, however, wrestled with how poorly ethnic minorities are dealt with in the courts for so long now and I am firmly of the view that this battle for justice for them is one worth fighting. If I will not discuss this, then why would I expect anyone else to raise the issue?” ‘The Disproportionate Effect of s57 of the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015 (Findings of Fundamental Dishonesty) on Ethnic Minorities’ by Azeem Ali is our article for Day 4. In a step away from his usual credit hire content, this article saw Azeem dissect discriminatory attitudes towards ethnic minorities in the courtroom. We republished it earlier this year following its initial release in 2022, and found it was received as well as it was the first time around. Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eymAtCnH

Fmr. Police & Crime Commissioner, Board Member, College of Policing, and Chair, Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU). Back in business world. I too, have a dream 🌍

WHEN are we, as human beings who actually are no different to each other (regardless of what we think or are told) going to learn that evil comes in all skin colours, religions, ethnicities, nationalities etc. At the same time, goodness also comes in all skin colours, religions, ethnicities, nationalities etc. Why must we demonise and make 'others' as we so often do, when those others could literally save our lives the next moment? Why? I must make an embarrassing confession. The moment the news broke of this horrific incident in London's Leicester Square, my very first thought was "Oh God! Please I hope it is not a black, Muslim or Asian person, or an asylum seeker. Please". I really need to stop doing this as I should instinctively have thought of the victims. I was wrong to not have and must do better. This sadly, is part of the impact of the current climate, where a crime commited by one is deemed a crime committed by all. My sincere prayers are with the young child and her mother who were attacked today. A video of the suspect is already circulating and his motive is yet unknown as are the identities of those he stabbed repeatedly in broad daylight in a busy London shopping district. I am not going to get into the racial identity of the suspect. All I will say is that Abdullah, a 29 year old Muslim immigrant, working as a security guard, most likely saved the life of an 11 year old girl and her mother today.

  • Resolution accreditation!

Barrister - *family law * care * legal aid * crime *direct access *

Some good news for me this week. I have been reappointed as an Accredited Specialist in Children Law! This means, I am entitled to use the "resolution specialist" logo, which is a mark of recognition. To achieve this, law practitioners already have to be sufficiently experienced, and then pass a further exam aswell as submit a portfolio to show some recent cases and demonstrate their skill-set. I initially obtained this accreditation when I was a solicitor, as it would allow me to be head of a legal aid department, as well as claim a fee uplift from the legal aid agency in certain circumstances. More recently I reaccredited as it would be a good way to show instructing clients and solicitors that as a barrister, I still have the necessary skill set that can assist clients at court in a "resolution" and "child focussed way".
