Today, we run sophisticated machines that produce precision prototypes overnight at our product design studio in Bristol. Protecting critical subsea infrastructure through real-time electrical cable monitoring - because at 4000m deep, repairs can cost millions. We designed V-LIM 2 with our eye on the details - how operators would interact with the touchscreen, how maintenance teams would access components, even how it would fit into existing systems. The glass front provides both visual elegance and practical functionality. We created something people can rely on when million-pound infrastructure is at stake. At 4000m beneath the ocean's surface, a failed cable isn't just an engineering problem - it's a £1 million per kilometre crisis for vital infrastructure. Working with Viper Innovations Ltd, we transformed their subsea cable monitoring technology into the V-LIM2 - a device that detects faults and failures before they occur, helping keep critical infrastructure running. Our design combines an integrated glass touchscreen with CNC-machined aluminium, creating a premium yet practical solution. By streamlining the manufacturing process, we cut development time from months to weeks while ensuring economical production at lower quantities. We had a brilliant time returning to Gordano School to host two sessions of ‘The Realise Design Challenge 2024’ with their Year 10 D&T students. Working in teams of 3-4, we set them a goal that forced them to quickly iterate prototypes, consider critical feedback and build upon this. Iterative modelling is a process all designers in industry do, and often not encouraged enough within the education system. It was humbling to see the genuine enthusiasm and creativity of the pupils. Shout out to their wonderful teacher Mr Stanton for enabling this opportunity. Last week David Aitken (our Design Director) and Pippa Bridges (our Product Designer) visited Gordano School near Bristol, to speak to their sixth form students about careers in Product Design. They shared insights into ‘life as a designer’ and showed examples of the variety of projects Realise have worked on. It was inspiring to meet the budding designers of the future!
