WEEE Compliance for lighting | FREE lamp & luminaire recycling | Supporting a circular economy for lighting.

About us

Recolight is the leading UK WEEE compliance scheme for the lighting industry, taking on responsibility for its members’ WEEE compliance, giving their customers access to the UK’s most comprehensive free lamp collection and recycling service, and helping to ensure that as many lamps as possible are kept out of landfill. These new events and services complement the changes Recolight has already implemented to try to reduce the level of luminaire recycling, and increase reuse of old lighting equipment, and of excess lighting equipment stock. At Recolight, we are also doing our best to ‘walk the talk’ on the climate. All our events are hosted at locations that favour travel by public transport. Climate action is one of the criteria in our tenders. Recolight’s comprehensive offering makes it the preferred WEEE scheme for the lighting industry, setting the standard for the sector. It is the only WEEE compliance scheme in the UK to provide integrated Lamp and Luminaire collection and recycling. It has the biggest UK-wide network of collection points for all WEEE lighting. As a result, since its founding in 2007, Recolight has funded the recycling of over 333 million lamps, LEDs and luminaires, more than all other UK WEEE schemes put together. Recolight are now doing more than ever to support a circular economy. That includes product design training workshops to help lighting producers design for circularity, and to navigate the emerging voluntary and mandatory specifications. The Circular Lighting Report news service keeps the industry abreast of the latest developments. A certification service will help manufacturers demonstrate the their level of compliance with the CIBSE TM66 circular lighting standard. And vitally, the new in-person event, Circular Lighting Live which takes place in London on 22 September will provide a unique forum to consider forthcoming standards and legislation, emerging technologies and new business models

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗟𝗖𝗔 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗣𝗗 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀 A one day, in-person session on 27 November in London. Giving you hands on guidance for lighting manufacturers on Life Cycle Assessments and Environmental Product Declarations. The workshop will equip you with the knowledge and tools needed to understand ✔️ LCAs and EPDs for lighting products, ✔️ the timescales, data requirements, ✔️ how best to use product families to minimise costs. ✔️ The importance of product specific rules, ✔️ and the role of the luminaire specific PSR-0014.  Lighting designers, specifiers and end users are increasingly demanding credible third party certified environmental metrics. LCAs and EPDs are widely seen as the best way of meeting those needs. With an increasing number of lighting producers announcing that they have made LCAs and EPDs available, those that don’t act, risk being left behind. The workshop will be led by LCA expert and Recolight Environmental Metrics and Training Manager Dr Max Robson. Representatives of One Click LCA will also attend the event and will be able to answer questions regarding the operation of the automated One Click LCA system and the EPD Hub. NG Bailey targets Net Zero Leading electrical contractor NG Bailey, one of the UK's biggest installers of lighting and control systems, has announced that its plan to reduce its carbon emissions has been approved by an independent body.  The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved the company’s long-term science-based emissions reduction target to achieve net zero emissions by 2045. This new target is in addition to its existing science-based near-term targets and Race to Zero commitment This means that the firm will reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions – its directly-produced emissions – by 90 per cent by 2045 from a 2018/19 base year.  Additionally, NG Bailey commits to reducing absolute scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions – those produced indirectly by the supply chain – by 90 per cent also by 2045. Currently, 83 per cent of its total emissions are from the products and services that it purchases. But the contractor says that it is working with its supply chain partners to identify and deliver the necessary carbon reductions. Its long-term strategic ambitions are set out in it Net Positive strategy, and its work towards its Net Zero targets is supported by its existing near-term targets. It commits to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent by 2031 and that some 75 per cent of its suppliers, by spend, covering purchased goods and services and capital goods, will have science-based targets by 2027. • Read more: link in the comments • The Circular Lighting Report is powered by Recolight

NVC cuts plastic packaging NVC Lighting UK has cut the amount of plastic in the packaging of its luminaires after a change in its pallet wrap process. The company installed Armour Wrap from Springpack which provides strong puncture resistance and can be stretched more than a regular wrap. In its 12 months of use it has saved £4,000 and saved 47 kilograms of plastic.  The switch to working with Springpack has also helped to improve the company’s ability to make reliable and accurate forecasts regarding packaging in line with customer demands. The business operates from purpose-built premises in Birmingham including offices, 90,000 ft² of warehouse space and an assembly facility for made-to-order products. Andy Pagett, chief operating officer at NVC Lighting, told the Circular Lighting Report: ‘As a business, we’re constantly looking for ways to improve our environmental efficiency and identified packaging as an area to focus on. ‘We reached out to Springpack to enquire about our warehouse consumable needs and have been really impressed with the results from a cost and innovation perspective. ‘From an environmental standpoint, we have transitioned to using eco-friendly bubble wrap, air pillows, and document-enclosed wallets, all of which help contribute to our wider sustainability goals.’ • Read more: Link in the comments • The Circular Lighting Report is powered by Recolight

School is first to upgrade with retrofit LED modules A school in the north of England has become one of first in the UK to install a retrofit LED luminaire in the form factor of a fluorescent tube.  At Hedon Inmans primary school in Hull, the facilities team has replaced 14W T5 fluorescent tubes with Resus modules from The Regen Initiative.  The modules, whose drivers have integral Casambi Technologies wireless connectivity, were installed in 77 Thorlux XL5 luminaires.  The school, built in 2011, has been undergoing works to remedy issues arising from problems with the roof construction.  Additionally, the existing smart lighting had started to show signs of failure, says senior building services engineer James Martin. ‘Some of the sensor pods were failing to bring fittings on or communicate with other fittings,’ said Martin. ‘Despite the efficiency of the existing fittings, this coupled with the fluorescent lighting ban meant we had to begin to look at exploring replacing these sooner than had been hoped.  ‘The body of the fittings remained in excellent condition, and are clearly well built and it seemed a crying shame to simply skip a quality product, for in all likelihood an LED panel that wouldn’t be as well made, and wouldn’t have replaceable parts to allow continued future use.  ‘As a result we opted to look at refurbishing the fittings, as opposed to replacing them completely.  ‘The Regen Initiative solution, although not what I had initially expected, suits well as the LED modules can easily be replaced, allowing for the ongoing future maintenance of the fittings, and the fact that these can be used in conjunction with wireless dimming, meant the school could still have the same controllability they previously had with the existing solution.’  The Resus won two prestigious Build Back Better Awards earlier this year. Designed to fit the majority of existing T5 and T8 fluorescent fittings, its design allows it to pick up on existing fluorescent lamp holders, using them only as a mechanical fix.  All electronics are remote by the way of a remote driver allowing the product to be controls agnostic. Resus is designed to operate within any space where a fluorescent lamp once occupied.  It’s controls agnostic, meaning it can work within any building management system and will operate with any fixed output, DALI or wireless drivers, and will, as standard, operate with key switch, self-test and DALI monitored addressable emergency systems.  • Read more: Link in the comments • The Circular Lighting Report is powered by Recolight

Stoane reuses exhibition stand at LIGHT 24 Sustainable luminaire maker Stoane Lighting is to reuse its stand at the LIGHT 24 exhibition in London. It will be the third year in a row in which it has deployed the rebuildable construction at the Building Design Centre.  The move demonstrates to potential customers the firm’s environmental ethos and consistency in its values. The trend is also affecting international shows such as the Light + Building exhibition in Frankfurt. At the 2024 event earlier this year, a number of major lighting brand reused either most of all of their stands at the.  ERCO, XAL and RZB Lighting were among the luminaire makers whose stands were constructed from previously used elements and were designed for future use. • Read more: Link in the comments • The Circular Lighting Report is powered by Recolight
