With less than 6 weeks to go until Simpler Recycling changes kick off for workplaces, we're looking ahead at how the policy's implementation over the next few years will impact MRFs. Liquid cartons will be collected as part of dry mixed recyclables from all non-households in March 2025 and all households in March 2026, which is new for some areas. As the items often appear across different material streams, this will require reconfiguration of sorting processes for some MRFs. Leo Syrus, MRF Manager of Veolia UK Southwark IWMF, shares how investing in retrofittable robotic picking has enabled separation of liquid cartons from aluminium cans to high purity, without expensive plant renovation or labour-intensive manual picking. To find out how AI is readying MRFs for changing material streams following Simpler Recycling, read our blog by Ester Batchelor: https://lnkd.in/e32xA9j4 #SimplerRecycling #RobotsThatWork

But it needs a name... ⚠️ Installed above the final picking conveyor at our MRF, this vision unit captures images of waste materials. Before we install the robotic arm, this unit is busy learning and calibrating to identify waste in our MRF’s specific conditions, accounting for lighting, conveyor speed and material presentation. The team at Recycleye will then analyse what our robot is seeing, checking it is identifying items correctly and learning as it should be. As the brain of the robotic arm, this is a critical stage setting the foundation of the AI arms integration at our MRF. Our Recycleye QuantiSort® demo centre is well and truly tested! In this video, it's performing AI-powered quality control on rubble of size 40-400mm. On a line running at 30 tonnes per hour, the machine is ejecting residue (wood, plastics, metals & other) from rubble (brick, concrete, gypsum, tile & ceramic) using computer vision detection. The result? Input purity = 74%, output purity = 97%.

Our newest joiners went straight to Veolia Southwark on Friday to check out Recycleye QualiBot® in action. When being onboarded into the waste industry, nothing compares to touring the full sorting process in a MRF, concluding at the quality control cabin where robotic picking is performing the last-chance clean. Jordi, Hannes & Andrew were initiated into the world of AI-powered sorting as they witnessed Recycleye QualiBot® picking liquid cartons from the aluminium can line at Veolia Southwark IWMF. Thanks Veolia UK for hosting us 🦾

Introducing our new Technical Sales Managers in Europe..... 🇩🇪🇦🇹🇨🇭 Willkommen, Hannes! With over a decade's experience selling industrial equipment, he is ready to advise waste management companies across the DACH region on the road to automation. 🇪🇸🇵🇹 ¡Bienvenido, Jordi! Well acquainted with the Iberian waste management industry after 7 years leading plant engineering projects, he is excited to work with our existing and upcoming Spanish & Portuguese robot customers and establish AI as a leading sorting technology in the region. We can't wait to see AI-powered sorting continue to grow in these markets.

🇺🇸 Welcome to Resource HQ! We're having a very enjoyable and productive week hosting MSS Optical Sorters at our East London facility. As optical sorting partners, it's been valuable to discuss how computer vision detection can most effectively be integrated with air jet ejection for DMR, WEEE and C&D sorts. Having installed several AI optical sorters together across the US and Europe, our technology is constantly being strengthened by exchanging knowledge from MRF experience in different regions. ✈️ Safe travels back home, Felix Hottenstein & Patrick Nicol.

Welcome to the team! ♻️ We're excited to introduce our 2 newest Recycleytes: Robbie joins us as Demo Centre & Workshop Technician, and is busy helping us get the most out of our new facility so that visitors can accurately benchmark our machines on their material. Andrew takes the role of Software Engineer, and with a background in software engineering for robotic arms, he is already making himself invaluable by reimagining how our systems interact with each other. They're both getting stuck into the world of waste, so join us in wishing them a warm welcome 👋

"It doesn't add much to our maintenance routine." We've worked with our customers, such as Leo Syrus of Veolia UK, to ensure Recycleye QualiBot® requires only very minor daily and weekly upkeep tasks. Just one of these refinements is an increased filter chamber size, reducing frequency of emptying by operators. Recycleye QualiBot® units are robots that work, and our customers are the first to testify. Explore the full Veolia Southwark story here: https://lnkd.in/ebwzb5tP #RobotsThatWork

Last week, representatives from Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs visited Sweeep Kuusakoski Ltd to explore how waste electrical appliances are sorted for recycling. We discussed how we've partnered with SWEEEP to install the world's first AI optical sorter for WEEE, meaning objects containing high value materials such as circuit boards and copper cables are separated from lower value materials. As the quantity of WEEE to be processed increases, it's vital to implement technology that can bulk sort these materials into granular classes with high purity and recovery, ready for recycling. AI is at the forefront of that conversation. #WEEE #recycling
