Today, Solidaridad East and Central Africa, with support from Danida Green Business Partnerships / Danida Market Development Partnerships, has launched the Harvesting Carbon Project, an innovative initiative aimed at transforming Uganda’s coffee sector to better withstand climate challenges. In this partnership with Solidaridad Netherlands, Louis Dreyfus Company, Lavazza Foundation and Merrild, the project will pioneer a “pay-for-impact” model, where carbon impact units (verified scope 3 reductions) will be generated and traded alongside coffee. The project is envisaged to impact over 4,500 farmers, by championing the adoption of low-carbon, regenerative agriculture practices. The project promoted solutions will contribute to poverty alleviation, income improvement, and green market access. By integrating biochar and coffee agroforestry, the project aims to reduce 26,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions while enhancing farmer livelihoods. The Harvesting Carbon Project is a step towards building a sustainable and resilient future for Uganda’s coffee communities.
