💡 For those who missed Stuart Walker's paper machine post last week, here's the #InTheField video using Emerson's Automation Technologies & Solutions AMS 2140 analyser: 👷♂️ "Bit of quick analysis in the field using Emerson 2140 and PeakVue on a paper machine slow speed bearing at 16.5 RPM. Early impacting present in the time waveform indicating some bearing damage which we will trend using the Waveform P-P parameter in G's. Non synchronous frequencies in the spectral data suggest bearing related. Will apply fault frequencies against the data once we have the bearing no. 🚦 If levels continue to increase and exceed 1-1.5 G's P-P in the time waveform we will look to plan a replacement at next shut. In the meantime the bearing will be greased as we suspect water is getting into the bearing via the seal. 📈 Although this was an extra reading i took with increased lines of resolution (3200) and more averages to clean up the spectrum. The standard route PeakVue reading was a 500Hz HP filter with Fmax of 20Hz (80 Orders) and 800 LOR this gives a good balance of data quality vs time as many other rolls to test." 🔗 For more info on the Emerson AMS 2140 Analyser, click here: https://lnkd.in/di7HCcs, or email the Team at: info@rms-reliability.com. #AMS2140 #emerson #conditionmonitoring #vibrationanalysis #paperindustry #slowspeedbearing

📸 For #MAMonday this week we return to a video from 2021 in which Stuart Walker answers the question: Are bearing defect frequencies always accompanied with multiple harmonics, high G levels and impacting? 📝 "The answer is no. I have only seen it a few times but it is possible where the first harmonic of the bearing defect is dominant in velocity with low level harmonics and low G's. Its normally due to distortion of a raceway or race wear with no spalling, causing high vibration at the Ball Pass Frequency. 🔎 Really exciting to capture one of these faults with our Motion Amplification® Iris MX™ Camera. The MA video has been filtered to the 1st harmonic of the outer race frequency at 128Hz, check out the flexing of the housing! This shot is only part of a deeper investigation into poor reliability of a set of dyno flywheel support bearings. Just awaiting inspection of the bearing to determine if the bearing housing is distorting or there is some unusual wear on the outer race. Got some MA tach sync shots of the shaft too which is super interesting and related to the bearing issues." 📚 To learn more about RDI Technologies Inc. 🔎 For those new to the topic of Vibration Analysis, here's a great example of successfully combining CM technologies: MA + VA by Stuart Walker. The problem at hand involves elevated vibration levels in an Oven Infeed Motor and its adjacent structures, including guard rails, with a measured range of 10 to 100 mm/sec RMS. These vibrations could potentially lead to premature wear, reduced efficiency, and in worst-case scenarios, catastrophic machine failure. 📹 To visualise and quantify this problem, RDI Technologies Inc.'s IRIS M™ Motion Amplification® camera was used to offer a visual perspective of the vibrations, magnifying their movements to detect issues otherwise invisible to the naked eye. Complementing this, Emerson's Automation Technologies & Solutions AMS 2140 Analyser provided detailed data through transient run-up tests spanning from 0 to 37,000 Cycles Per Hour (CPH) and bump tests conducted with the machinery switched off. These tests are critical for pinpointing the vibrational issues at their source. 🛠️ The analysis led to a twofold recommendation. First, it was noted that the oven infeed stabilisation structure and guarding resonate at natural frequencies within the operational speed range of the oven infeed drive, which is suboptimal as it can amplify vibrations. The drive roll of the oven infeed, operating at a frequency of 1 times the Rotations Per Minute (RPM), is identified as the primary source of excitation force. 📊 To mitigate this issue, the recommendations were: either reduce the excitation force generated by the oven infeed drive roll or adjust the natural frequencies of the structure to be at least 30% different from the operational speeds, avoiding resonance. Implementing stiffening measures would serve to increase the natural frequencies, whereas adding mass would have the opposite effect, reducing them. These adjustments must be carefully calculated and implemented to ensure that the natural frequencies do not coincide with the excitation forces, thus effectively minimising the vibration and stabilising the system for reliable operation. 🔗 For a deeper dive into the technologies used in this case example, explore the capabilities of the IRIS M™ Motion Amplification® camera for visual diagnostics: https://lnkd.in/dwaq93E, and the AMS 2140 Analyser for advanced vibration analysis and data collection: https://lnkd.in/di7HCcs. These technologies were instrumental in addressing the complex vibrational issues on this motor. #motionamplification #vibrationanalysis #emerson #ams2140 #rditechnologies #irism

💬 Stuart Walker “I wish I’d had the Motion Amplification® technology over the last 26 years. It just makes the job so easy at times. One motor was showing raised levels to 12mm/sec RMS at 1XRPM compared to others doing 1-2 mm/sec RMS. Data was via 2 remote sensors. Very difficult access, so we used the IRIS M™ MA camera from 20 meters away high on a nearby gantry using different lenses to see the full picture. 🔎 We could easily determine from the MA no loose mounting components were present, just a flexing of the weak structure excited by the 1XRPM of the motor. Closer inspection found two vertical stiffening bars missing! Must have not been replaced after previous motor removal. We are confident with these replaced and alignment checked, the vibration will be reduced.” ▶️ For more 'In-The-Field' Motor insights, visit: https://lnkd.in/dtkSKHsA 📷 Download the IRIS M™ Spec-sheets: https://lnkd.in/dwaq93E #vibrationanalysis #motors #foodindustry #maintenance

⚡Improving Reliability in Power Generation: A Case Example 📈 This vibration analysis follow-up report in the power generation sector highlights the critical importance of condition monitoring. A G745A Liquid Ring Vacuum Pump showed severe vibration anomalies, traced to significant defects in the SKF 21313E bearing. The root cause was identified as moisture-induced corrosion, worsened by inadequate storage and sealing. Immediate corrective actions included bearing replacement, enhanced storage practices, and improved sealing arrangements. 📉 The results were transformative: vibration levels dropped significantly, avoiding an estimated £21,324 in potential secondary damage costs. Production uptime was preserved, with no losses due to a standby pump. This case demonstrates how timely intervention can protect critical assets, minimise costs, and ensure operational continuity. #VibrationAnalysis #IndustrialMaintenance #PredictiveMaintenance #CostSavings #EngineeringExcellence #PowerGeneration

💬 "I would say the majority of 1XRPM vibration problems I see on plant are due to issues related to the base and holding down bolts not unbalance or misalignment." - Stuart Walker ▶️ In this short #MAMonday video, the Iris M™ camera reveals the root cause, in this case, a poor base: "A shiny new section of pipe gives a clue to the past history of these pumps which we had not seen before. Within minutes the Motion Amplification® camera reveals in amazing detail why the pipe section failed and will fail again. The poor base was causing pipe failures and damage to the bearings on the running/standby pumps. 🎨 Fortunately its all planned to be replaced to significantly improve reliability. Footage shot using RDI Technologies Inc.'s Iris M™ camera with the colour add-on, and software v3.2." 🔗 See the comments below for a list of helpful resources, or email the team at info@motionamplification.co.uk. #motionamplification #conditionmonitoring #vibrationanalysis #pumps #pipework #IRISM
