In June 2024, our CEO had the privilege of participating in an insightful panel at the #InstallerShow2024. The panel, titled "What Do I Need to Do to Get My First 5 Installations Completed?", was a deep dive into the practical steps and considerations for those new to the installation industry.
Keep an eye out over the next few days as we share what Tej (Co-Founder of Renbee) and Adam (Co-Founder of Carno) covered, along with some of the questions they were asked…
------------
1). What is MCS?
MCS, or Microgeneration Certificate Scheme, is an independent body that creates and maintains standards for domestic low-carbon products, installers, and their installations - ranging from heat pumps, solar PV, battery storage, and solar thermal to wind and more. You can think of it as an independent program that certifies the quality of renewable energy products and the individuals who install them. Being MCS accredited showcases your dedication to providing top-quality services to your customers, and you need to be part of this group to access BUS grants or, for most utilities, provide feed-in from any microgeneration.
2). How do I become MCS accredited?
To join the MCS register, you must complete a UKAS-accredited training course (https://lnkd.in/e3w5v9-c). Following this, you need to finish a project and have it assessed through an independent assessment of quality, usually via a Certification Body. Most installers will complete their first project on their own property, as it’s less stressful and you will be able to wait for the MCS audit, which can take a while.
💡If you have yet to select your independent assessment body, we recommend looking at The IAA, who have an industry-leading 12-day turnaround time for applications.
3). I’ve become MCS accredited and am ready to start my first project. Now what?
🚨 Plan Ahead! 🚨
Installing renewable energy products can feel complicated, with MCS standards to follow, QMS documents required, building regulations to adhere to, and several DNO forms to navigate. Until you get comfortable with the end-to-end process, take more time to plan ahead. Planning and being cautious is not a bad thing!
💡If you are really unsure of what to do, there are umbrella schemes where you ‘just have to complete the work’. But be prepared to sacrifice a significant amount of margin for these, so it’s worth thinking through if it makes sense for you and your business before committing!
📣 With Renbee, you can house and maintain the QMS documents required for your MCS audit, manage customers as they enter into the top of your sales funnel, store system design documents, and manage your quotes, risk register, and contracts.
