  • With changes to mandatory commercial recycling services around food waste due to take effect in March 2025, time is running out to put new arrangements in place ahead of the change. ⌛ This change is going to affect thousands of businesses across the country – not just those directly manufacturing or selling food - so to help businesses and local authorities get ahead of this change, we're offering a free webinar on 19 December for businesses wanting to know more about this new legislation and what it could mean for their operations. This webinar looks at how we can navigate the challenges of setting up new recycling collections and find practical ways to reduce food waste. 🥕

    Circular economy policy & research

🔔🔔Out with the old, in with the new - it's getting to that time of year, and this was the theme of today's joint meeting of the Scottish Parliament's cross-party groups on Wellbeing Economy, Social Enterprise and Circular Economy, hosted by Wellbeing Economy Alliance - WEAll (thanks Lukas Bunse). In this case, the 'old' are the highly financialised, profit-centric businesses that can dehumanise employees while extracting (and often exporting) profits. The 'new' are inclusive, democratic enterprises such as co-ops, employee- and community-owned businesses, which seek to thrive economically while supporting people and planet. As we seek to build a Scottish economy with more jobs in circular businesses and renewable energy, Neil McInroy points out that there is an opportunity to support more of these to be human-centric, democratic organisations that create the kind of jobs people actually want. Personally, I'd love to see this more prominently supported in high school business education (rather than the current offering, where young people are taught about entrepreneurship with scant regard for social or environmental considerations), and in the advice available for Scottish start-ups. Thanks to Neil, Robert McMaster, Michael Cook, Susan Pinkney and Lucinda Broadbent for helping connect the threads of wellbeing & circular economy in a tangible way. Neil’s recent report for the Scottish Government on the ‘Independent Review of Inclusive and Democratic Business Models (IDBMs) in Scotland’ is here: https://lnkd.in/eHERMU5C (And of course, I have to point out that Resource Futures embodies this shift, as a non-profit-sharing, employee-owned B Corp that focuses on a just transition to a low-carbon, circular economy!)

  • Partnerships = progress 🫶 We were lucky enough to have three of our projects - Community RePaint, Fixy and RECOFLOOR LIMITED - all nominated at this year's MRW National Recycling Awards. 🏅 We love awards season because it offers us a chance to celebrate the partnerships that power our community-focused campaigns, and thank the crucial partners that help to power them: 🖌️ Our paint reuse programme Community RePaint and Dulux (fresh off a victory in the British Coatings Federation Awards) were shortlisted for 'Circular Economy Initiative'; 🔌 Our waste electronics recovery project Fixy and our partners Somerset Council, SUEZ UK, Ecosurety, Material Focus and DONATE IT were up for 'Partnership Excellence – Public/Private sector'; ♻️ And vinyl flooring takeback scheme RECOFLOOR LIMITED (with Altro Limited and Polyflor Ltd) were up for three separate awards: 'Circular Economy Initiative', 'Partnership Excellence – Commercial' and 'Recycling Excellence'. Sadly we didn't pick up any awards this year, but it was a wonderful opportunity for our teams to celebrate their achievements and thank our partners for their part in bringing about a more circular society. 🟢

  • We are delighted to welcome RECOFLOOR LIMITED to our team at Resource Futures! 🥳 As of November 2024, we've taken on the management of Recofloor - an award-winning UK-wide scheme that offers a sustainable alternative to landfill for businesses looking to manage their discarded vinyl by collecting and recycling it, providing an opportunity to drive down waste, cut costs and reduce the environmental impact of their activities. The project continues to be jointly funded by Altro Limited and Polyflor Ltd, who will be working with ourselves and the existing Recofloor team to ensure the programme continues to thrive and achieve its mission to greatly reduce the amount of vinyl material being wasted in the construction and flooring sectors. You can read more about the transition here: https://lnkd.in/eMuEr8hc
