About us
RheEnergise is bringing fresh innovation to the world’s dominant form of storage: pumped hydro storage. We call our solution High-Density Hydro®. HD Hydro® uses our proprietary HD Fluid R-19 which has 2.5x the density of water. It is environmentally benign, non-toxic, non-corrosive, and non-reactive. R-19 gives RheEnergise projects 2.5x the power and 2.5x the energy when compared to water. Unlike traditional pumped hydro energy storage, HD Hydro can operate using smaller hills as opposed to needing mountains. As a result, it opens up vastly more options in terms of potential sites. The technology is sized in the range of 10MW to 50MW, and 20MWh to 100MWh. HD Hydro is the best option for meeting society’s energy storage needs; compared to the competition it is agile and fast to deploy, massively scalable, has low impact, low cost, and low risk. RheEnergise consists of a highly experienced team with a strong track record in renewable energy, engineering, finance and bringing innovation to market.

See the latest update from our Chief Technical Officer, Tamás Bertényi on our collaboration with Special Alloy Fabricators. #energystorage #pumpedhydro #engineering
In almost all instances, RheEnergise prioritizes building upon existing knowledge and supply chains in the hydro industry as part of our core strategy to achieve scale. But one key exception is the Main Inlet Valve of our HD Hydro® demonstration plant. Extensive lab testing informed us that the typical spherical ball valve design favoured by the pumped hydro industry is not the best solution for compatibility with our High Density Fluid. This led us to scour the world in search of an innovative valve manufacturer willing to rise to this particular challenge. And our collaboration with Special Alloy Fabricators, where they have spent decades building valves for the most challenging industries in the world, has been worth its weight in gold! SAF has not only the expertise and the technology, but also the enthusiasm to be creative and fully engage with clients to solve their specific problems. This photo shows the final HD Valve products for our demonstrator: the Main Inlet Valves for the turbine (larger) and for the pump (smaller). These valves sailed through their factory acceptance tests (no surprise there!) and are already on-site. In the next week or two they will be lifted into the powerhouse and the mechanical installation can begin! Many thanks to everyone at SAF, Nathan Perrott, Maria Eugenia Aguirre, Amir Emami, Nathan Epp, Mike Robbins, Tahere Dejahang and everyone else we've gotten to know on this journey! As cool as this all is, the best is yet to come...

Why is energy storage essential for global decarbonisation? At COP28, nearly 200 countries committed to a global renewable energy target of 11 terawatts (TW) by 2030, tripling today’s installed capacity. Yet these commitments are necessary, but not sufficient, to achieve transformative change. The sun does not always shine, and the wind does not always blow, so energy storage is vital to balance supply and demand and unlock the full value of renewable energy to decarbonise energy systems globally. The commitments made by national governments to accelerate the clean energy transition and rapidly develop renewable energy resources must be matched by efforts to rapidly deploy and scale energy storage technologies, necessitating a global energy storage pledge at #COP29. #LDESenablers are essential to deploy #1500GWby2030. Clean power 2030: what does it mean for zero/negative prices and energy storage? Here from our energy market analyst, Barnaby Winser.
Clean power 2030: what does it mean for zero/negative prices and energy storage? ⚡️ National Energy System Operator (NESO) have published their advice. The headline: clean power, defined as unabated gas generation providing less than 5% of electricity generation, is a monumental challenge but possible. Flexibility and networks are key. 📈 Rapid increases in flexibility to utilise the almost tripled renewable capacity (typical generation profiles are shown in the first graphic): Battery capacity will need to grow by 380-480%, demand side flexibility by 320-370% and long duration energy storage by 60-180% (see the second graph). All of these sources, in addition to dispatchable plants, can eat into the gas generation required. 📉 How will price patterns change (graph 3 displays the distribution of wholesale prices)? Despite providing under 5% of annual generation, gas (or biomass) would set the wholesale price around 25% of the time, as it remains the marginal unit on the system. Zero/negative prices will comprise 26-30% of hours of the year, up from around 2% so far in 2024. This demonstrates a clear incentive for storage of sufficient duration to shift the low cost energy to further* displace higher carbon and higher cost sources. While the system need is clear, NESO see the complexities of pumped hydro, and limited project deployment potential of other technologies as the main barriers to scaling up long duration energy storage. These are the barriers RheEnergise is innovating to overcome, ensuring the large increase in renewable generation can be utilised. Some of the shortfalls in renewables will however exceed the duration storage can economically provide for, leading to the need for a strategic reserve of gas. 💡 Overall, NESO project a £9-10/MWh drop in wholesale prices from today (£5-6/MWh less than the counterfactual). This would almost offset the additional CAPEX investment required, meaning system cost is similar across the scenarios. However, in the clean power cases, power prices are significantly less sensitive to the international gas markets. Further, much of the infrastructure would remain intact beyond the repayment of its investment cost, enabling a low-cost, low-carbon system into the future. 👏 The plan marks a step up in ambition, and NESO highlights the need for alignment of market design, networks and innovation. RheEnergise is committed to supporting this vision, by providing next-generation energy storage. Please reach out if you'd like to hear more about our solution and how we see it fitting in the evolving system.
