The latest research from Age UK highlights the impact of loneliness for older people and that if we don’t tackle it, by 2034 there will be 1.2 million people over 65 in England who will be regularly experiencing feelings of loneliness. This is something we're sure that will resonate with many of our residents which is why each year, we pause to reflect on how we can support the older community. There are a number of vital events and resources available to combat loneliness and isolation over the Christmas period (and throughout the year) including One Day at Christmas, Re-engage (Community Christmas directory) and a range of charities that can be contacted 24/7. We've been enjoying our #HeritageFocus which sees us highlight the history found across our 150+ estates. This time, we're throwing it back to 1901 when our Shephard's Mead retirement estate was the Tewkesbury Union Workhouse. But it's interesting history didn't stop there...in 1930 the site was taken over by Gloucester Council and became Holmwood House Public Assistance Institution. In 1948, it joined the NHS as Holm Hospital providing geriatric care until it's closure in 1969. Our estates have become home for many retired residents across the country but many of those estates are also home to a range of local wildlife, some of which have become well known 'celebrities' in their community. 🐦 A resident pheasant regularly patrols the grounds of an estate we manage in #Malmesbury, #Wiltshire 🦆 At our very first estate in #Ringmer, #EastSussex, a pair of ducks can be found pottering around the grounds daily and knocking on resident's patio windows for attention. They even attended the estate's 50th anniversary party last year! 🦊 A resident fox can often be found in the garden having a snooze in the early morning sunshine at an estate we manage in #Brighton 🦌 In #WestMalling in #Kent, there is a family of young deer who patrol the parkland, and in our #Guildford estate, a friendly Badger is often spotted exploring the garden. As a #Surrey based leasehold property management company with estates all over the country, we rely on many local small businesses, from window cleaners and gardeners to cleaning companies and handypersons - without them our estates wouldn't look as great as they do. At one of our estates in #Kent, a gardening contractor helped to repurpose and transform a derelict area at the estate and even donated a cold frame to help residents grow some of their own plants. At another of our estates in #Hertfordshire, one of the local garden contractors, always pops by on icy mornings to make sure the paths are salted for the residents. It's these extra acts of kindness from small businesses that make such a difference to our residents, and ensures our estates are a lovely place to live.
