About us
Roke is a leading UK innovator in science and engineering. For over 60 years we’ve been improving the world through innovation by combining the physical and digital in new ways. Our journey began in defence but as the decades have rolled on, we're also inventing and engineering technically advanced data and communication systems in national security and for Fortune 500 companies. From innovations in computer vision powering the autonomous landing of a drone at sea, to an artificial intelligence inspection system that drastically reduces aircraft turnaround times by autonomously inspecting jet turbines. Right through to the technology behind Hawk-Eye tracking the trajectory of balls in sport. It all began at Roke. Roke people are curious and unashamedly technical. That’s why we’ve fostered an environment where some of the world’s finest minds have the freedom, support and trust to succeed. Our team of 600+ engineers are uniquely placed to use their deep knowledge of sensors, communications, cyber and AI to combine and apply these technologies to keep people safe whilst unlocking value. Modern technology has meant that people across the world have more access to systems and information at their fingertips than every before. Keeping those systems up to date and secure, however, is a huge and constant challenge. AI is also on the rise, and powering many of the systems we use regularly - so what does that mean for the security of critical systems that we rely on? Despite being under some of the West’s toughest sanctions, #Iran has developed a robust trade for its #Oil – but the question is, how? The Roke Intelligence team contributed to this impressive investigation from Reuters, created by Paul C. and Prasanta Kumar Dutta. Delving into leaked emails from Iranian shipping firm, #SaharaThunder, the article reveals how the company was able to ship nearly 20 million barrels of oil, valued at $1.7 billion through AIS #Spoofing and other means of #Sanctions evasion. The #Intelligence team of Nick Loxton, Daniel Stow and Robert Parkington analysed #OSINT gathered by Reuters, including ship-to-ship transfers and ship movements, and identified satellite images of the transactions, helping to spotlight just how operational decision makers in Iran try to circumvent sanctions. More restrictions are likely to be imposed on Iran in 2025, so make sure to follow the Roke Intelligence page for regular updates on Iranian sanctions and other geopolitical events affecting the #Maritime domain. Iran has built a roaring global trade for its oil, relying on a shadow fleet of tankers that conceal their activities to skirt sanctions, and willing buyers in Asia to keep its economy afloat and to finance anti-Western militias in the Middle East. Using leaked data, Reuters uncovered how one Iranian company evaded Western sanctions. From March 2022 to February 2024, Sahara Thunder shipped around the world almost 20 million barrels of oil, valued at some $1.7 billion based on the average market price in 2023. Hacking group PRANA Network leaked the Sahara Thunder emails in February of last year because it wanted to lift the lid on Iran’s circumvention of Western sanctions, two of the hackers told Reuters https://reut.rs/424QiDk

How does #Iran move sanctioned #Oil around the world? As part of its investigation into Iran's remarkably resilient oil trade, proliferated by its #ShadowFleets, Reuters asked us to independently verify data and findings it had gathered from leaked emails from Iranian shipping company, #SaharaThunder. By analysing #OSINT gathered by Reuters, including ship-to-ship transfers and ship movements, and identified satellite images of the transactions, we helped reveal offloading points and instances of spoofing that explained how the company was able to ship nearly 20 million barrels of oil, valued at $1.7 billion despite being subject to strict Western #Sanctions. The world isn’t just physical - it’s digital too, and to fully understand it we need to bring these two together. Without doing that we can’t make sense of our surroundings or combat disinformation - in an operational environment that’s a no go. To learn more about what all of that actually means in the real world - get in touch with our Innovation Team. Autonomy, AI, common tasking frameworks even; the team knows them back to front, and has even written a whitepaper that you can download for free here: https://lnkd.in/eNPjci6r
