Changing the way we see life
About us
The Rosalind Franklin Institute is a new national institute dedicated to bringing about transformative changes in life science through interdisciplinary research and technology development. The Institute will bring together researchers in life sciences, physical sciences, and engineering, to develop disruptive new technologies designed to tackle major challenges in health and life sciences. The Institute is an independent organisation funded by the UK government through the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and governed by a joint venture of by ten UK universities, and will have its central hub at the Harwell Campus, delivered by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). The hub will house a unique portfolio of scientific tools and researchers from both industry and academia. The Institute will work nationally with equipment and researchers located in spokes distributed throughout the partner network of universities. The Institute will work with industrial and academic partners from across the UK, fostering interdisciplinary research with real impact in imaging, diagnostics, drug development, and many more fields.

🦸 Hidden Superheroes in Our Cells!? New research led by the CVR and Rosalind Franklin Institute, has uncovered how a team of cellular “superheroes” — the U2 snRNPs — leap into action to stop viruses in their tracks. Normally busy making proteins, these molecular defenders switch gears during infection, transforming into roadblocks to prevent viruses from multiplying. Published in Molecular Cell (Cell Press), this discovery could inspire future antiviral therapies. Find out more about these hidden heroes and their vital role in the fight against infection: https://lnkd.in/eS6u6G7K Read the study: https://lnkd.in/ef7vYn7K

Congratulations to all of the 2025 SSI Fellows, including the Franklin's Laura Shemilt! Laura's project focuses on establishing a community around Cloud-Native technology and its uses. Laura shared what she hopes to achieve through the Fellowship Programme: "I want to bring together good practice from across the community to accelerate UK research with cloud native technology. I wanted to bring some of the exciting work we do at the Franklin to other people in the Research Software Engineering community that may be facing similar problems. "Being selected for this is a huge achievement. I am very thankful for the support of my colleagues, Alex Lubbock and Mark Basham for the help and support they have given me making the initial concept into a fully fledged idea. I would love to share with the community the opportunities we have for AI in the Franklin."
🧭 The selection process for this year’s SSI Fellowship Programme has now ended and we’re excited to introduce our 27 new Fellows and share their inspiring plans: https://lnkd.in/dCAhc7Fn Congratulations to all our new Fellows!
