Today marks International Darwin Day The day was created to reflect intellectual bravery and curiosity reflect by Charles Darwin. We at the Royal Society of Medicine have always celebrated innovative thinking. In 1868 we received a letter of thanks from Charles Darwin himself after he was granted membership at the RSM. Should the NHS monetise its data? This was the topic of our Great Debate last night. Debating against monetisation we had: ❌ Sam Smith, Policy and Lead Coordinator at MedConfidential ❌ Caroline Rivett, Former Partner, Global Cyber Security Life Sciences Leader Debating for monetisation we had: ✔️ Axel Heitmueller, Chief Executive Officer, Imperial College Health Partners ✔️ Jonathan McKee, Head of Information Governance, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Ahead of hearing the speakers' arguments the audience was 61% for monetising data and 39% against. The topic captured the attention of the audience with questions around patient trust, who would want NHS data, and what data the NHS could leverage? By the end of the debate, the audience still were on the side of monetisation, now with 67% saying we should monetise NHS data and 33% saying we should not. “We all have to get our sleeves rolled up and help” Professor Maggie Rae CBE, President of the RSM Epidemiology and Public Health Section and RSM Trustee, speaking at our third annual Tackling Health Inequalities conference in partnership with NHS England last week. In her keynote speech, she talked about the crippling effect poverty has on health in the UK. She went on to discuss how one of the best ways to escape poverty is access to a quality education, however right now school readiness is currently a national crisis and “if we were working in emergency planning, a major incident would be declared”. #tacklinghealthinequalities #healthinequalities
