📜 On this day in 1873, James Bell Pettigrew was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Pettigrew was a celebrated anatomist who developed a keen interest in the theory of flight. He became an authority on the flight mechanics of birds, bats, and insects, concluding that their wings followed a figure-eight pattern during flight. He hypothesised that by copying this motion, he could advance the development of artificial flying. Inspired by this theory, he attempted to build a flying machine with flapping wings. Pettigrew's pioneering work on animal locomotion and bird flight would go on to influence the Wright brothers in the development of the first airplane. In 1871, he published his research in the RSE's first scientific journal, Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. We recently exhibited at the Scottish Labour Conference, where we had the opportunity to showcase the RSE's multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach to addressing key societal challenges. A special thank you to the panel of experts, including Mercedes Villalba MSP, who led a fringe event inspired by the RSE's inquiry into public financial support for tree planting and forestry. We look forward to continuing these important conversations and exploring solutions. Among our stall visitors were Scottish Labour leader, Anas Sarwar, and Chris Murray MP, as pictured below.

📜 On this day in 1856, James Clerk Maxwell, Scottish physicist and mathematician, was elected as a Fellow of the RSE. However, Maxwell's association with the RSE began much earlier. His paper, Oval Curves, was read to the Society by James D. Forbes in April 1846, when Maxwell was just 14 years old. Maxwell is perhaps best known for formulating the classical theory of electromagnetic radiation, a groundbreaking theory that identified electricity, magnetism, and light as interconnected phenomena. In recognition of his lasting impact, the RSE has honoured Maxwell in two significant ways. In 2006, the RSE commissioned a hologram to celebrate his pioneering work in colour photography and holography. That same year, a statue of Maxwell was unveiled, sculpted by Sandy Stoddart, as a tribute to his immense contributions to both physics and engineering. Today, the RSE celebrates Maxwell's enduring legacy, which continues to shape advancements in physics, engineering, and technology.
