Take a moment. A Short-eared Owl drifts low over saltmarshes, wings steady in the coastal breeze. Below, Lapwings rise, their silhouettes shifting against the light. A quiet dance of air and land, wild and free. Let nature’s rhythm settle you. #RSPBNatureBreak

About us
Passionate about nature, dedicated to saving it. Since we started on our mission in 1889, the threats to nature have continued to grow, but we've grown to meet them too. We’re now the largest nature conservation charity in the UK (although our work stretches far beyond that), consistently delivering successful conservation, forging powerful new partnerships with other organisations and inspiring others to stand up and give nature the home it deserves.

Today, the governments of the UK have launched their action plan for tackling biodiversity loss this decade - known as the UK's National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, or NBSAP for short. While these NBSAP plans are a good first step, they do not go far enough in guaranteeing that the UK’s global promises will be put into action on the ground. As some of the most nature depleted countries in the world, the countries of the UK have a real responsibility to pull their weight in efforts to turn the tide of loss and put the mission of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) – the global plan to save nature agreed by countries including the UK at COP15 - into place. I share a photo of the UK's events space at COP16 in Colombia in 2024 here, taken by our RSPB team, as a reminder of our global commitments and the important role we played on the global stage. We welcome the UK’s leading part in creating the KMGBF and the UK has made clear that it intends to meet the goals, targets and mission of the KMGBF domestically, in a collaborative manner - but this NBSAP simply rehashes existing commitments and strategies without adding the detail needed to guarantee action. We all know that a target, and a headline promise, can become just a talking point or a soundbite. It’s nothing without a clear delivery plan for how it will be achieved. Now, we need to see each of the UK’s countries and territories get to work in setting robust legislation for nature, which enshrines targets in law and sets up the frameworks and finance needed to implement urgent action at scale. Crucially, the upcoming spending review in Westminster must ensure that the targets promised under the NBSAP are backed by adequate funding. It’s also essential that the NBSAP is implemented in alignment with climate targets – especially the UK’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which was recently released and included commitments to align action for nature and climate. We’ve set out the next steps we believe each country of the UK and the UK Overseas Territories need to make in a blog that’s linked in the comments. As I write, UK decision makers are meeting others from across the world at the resumed sessions of the UN Biodiversity Convention COP16 in Rome and again we have a small team there. But to maintain global credibility on leadership for nature, our governments need to walk the walk, as well as talk the talk. #Biodiversity #Nature #KMGBF #ForNature

Right now, the UK Government is considering cuts to the nature-friendly farming budget. ❌🍃 This would be a disaster for nature, farming, and our future. Sign the petition and tell the UK Government: Nature can’t afford a pay cut. 👇 https://lnkd.in/eAQ_JeuT

Take a breath, and escape. A Kingfisher waits, still and focused. Two meet, calls ringing softly against the rush of the current. A sudden dive - water ripples and the moment shifts. A perch, a catch. A shimmer of blue plunges once again into cool water, droplets scattering into the mist. Our Kingfisher rises, flying downstream into the quiet. #RSPBNatureBreak

We interrupt your scroll with some good news! 💚 Thanks to the purchase of a final piece of land at RSPB Geltsdale, the reserve is now fully secured for nature. That means over 5,500 hectares of habitat for wildlife, and a future where it can thrive: more woodlands for Cuckoos, Black Grouse and Red Squirrels; rivers running clear for Otters and amphibians; wildflower-rich hay meadows alive with pollinators and bursting with birdsong; restored moorland and wetlands welcoming back Hen Harriers, Curlews, Short-eared Owls, and more. Now, we can go further…more woodlands planted, bogs revitalised, and wetlands restored to give even more wildlife the space it needs. This is a huge moment. And it’s just the start. 👇

Jus' a lil Pygmy Hippo doing Pygmy Hippo things… 🦛 They may be tiny (for a hippo), but Pygmy Hippos play a huge role in the Gola Rainforest, shaping their environment as they move through the undergrowth. With fewer than 2,500 left in the wild, every sighting is special - and a sign that conservation efforts are working. Through camera trap monitoring, habitat protection, and community-led conservation, RSPB and partners are working to safeguard these rare creatures and the landscapes they call home. Watch this special glimpse of a Pygmy Hippo in the wild and read more about our work in Gola: https://brnw.ch/21wQInn 👈 #WorldHippoDay
