New Year, New You? #JustOneStep #94 is to write down your objectives. Regardless of your financial year, January is a great time to review, update and document your security objectives for the year ahead. But do they need to change? In information security, I am always worried when clients talk about 'new' objectives for a new financial year. For me, objectives are a destination (often never to be reached!) not the journey. #JustOneStep #93 The great prediction of 2025 is around the growth and adoption of AI tools. I'm certainly very interested in seeing more about AI use in information security risk management and mitigation. Automated alerting and remediation for vulnerabilities has been around for some time, but the growth of tools claiming to monitor compliance with industry standards and to mitigate data loss or other security breaches has been enormous. I tend to be a bit of a Steady Eddie 🐢 when it comes to new shiny toys in the workplace. I've been around long enough (and remember the Emperor's New Clothes from when my children were smaller) to know that the IT industry loves nothing more than a new acronym and bandwagon to jump on. And the stories 📖 of sales personnel incentivised to achieve revenue rather than value for customers are designed to make me 🏃♀️ . However, I am truly excited by the change that technology brings and the opportunities it creates - that is why I am in this industry. I always have the latest tech in my personal life - so you could say I'm a bit of a speedster 🚀 when it comes to adoption for personal joy and benefit. Whether you are a 🐢 or a 🚀 , 2025 is the year you need to get off the fence and plan for adoption. Your users will already be playing with these tools - and just like 👑 Canute, you can't turn the tide. So today's #JustOneStep is to plan and choose your AI tools wisely. Understand where your data is processed and stored. Understand what the company does with your data and who can access it. Design policies and guardrails to ensure users are clear about what they can and cannot do (and using what tools). And monitor activity so that you can identify beneficial use cases for your organisation and be ready to support the business when they ask for a security perspective.
