Another brilliant conference hosted by Rhianna Rees and the Scottish Seaweed Industry Association in Oban last week. Here are some key takeaways: 🌿 Seaweed biostimulant = a cash crop: Seaweed biostimulants are poised to become the industry's primary revenue driver. 🔬 More research required: Farmers need multi-year studies to validate seaweed's benefits. Ongoing trials are essential to solidify this revenue stream. 🌊 Seaweed’s next evolution: Novel compounds like fucoidan will drive the next phase of the seaweed industry. 📊 Know your seaweed: Farmers must track species, strain, harvest conditions, and composition to confidently match products with the right buyers. 🏗️ Think big: Scaling up is key to reducing costs and driving the next evolution of the industry. Attending last week’s event hosted by the Royal Entomological Society offered valuable perspectives on the insect farming industry and its path forward. Here are some key takeaways: Global Scale of Insect Farming 🌍 Globally, insect farming is a surprisingly big industry — an estimated 1.1 trillion insects are farmed annually. Traditional practices, such as those in Northeast India where communities have farmed Asian hornets for centuries, showcase the deep-rooted history and immense potential within this rapidly growing sector. Need for Cross-Industry Collaboration 🤝 A great opening talk by David Tavernor from Fly2Feed emphasised that sharing knowledge across the sector is vital. Working together, rather than in silos, will allow the insect industry to compete with traditional farming sectors. Genetic Diversity and Potential in Breeding Programmes 🔬 Chris Jiggins from the University of Cambridge noted the vast genetic diversity in insects, especially black soldier flies. Companies like Beta Bugs Limited are leveraging this diversity to enhance breeding techniques and industry scalability. Ethics of Insect Farming ⚖️ The ethical implications were a surprisingly hot topic, with experts like Andrew Crump and Craig P. questioning if insect farming falls under the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022. This could lead to new regulatory considerations as we learn more about insect sentience. Thanks to the Royal Entomological Society for a thought-provoking conference!
We had a fascinating time at the #IAFFDebate last night at ThinkTank Birmingham. Looking forward to seeing everyone today for the main conference on Insects as Food and Feed #IAFF24. Last week was a dynamic one for RUBISKO as we attended the World Agri-Tech Innovation Summit in London and the North Sea Farmers Seaweed Conference in The Hague. Below are some of the key highlights and takeaways from each event: World Agri-Tech Innovation Summit: 🌍 We saw how data is transforming agriculture, with a fascinating presentation from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s showing the use of satellite imagery in revealing the Ukraine war’s impact on farming regions. 🌍 The summit highlighted that while advanced tech like AI and predictive models are exciting, it’s crucial to get the basics right—like setting up simple, time-saving systems that help farmers manage operations and get products to market. At RUBISKO, this is our goal. North Sea Farmers Seaweed Conference: 🌊 The seaweed sector is full of untapped potential, as leaders like Vincent Doumeizel highlighted. 🌊 We saw incredible innovation from companies such as Nordic SeaFarm, Notpla, Simply Blue Group, North Sea Farmers, Forebel, and Vyld, some of which are partnering with industry giants like Amazon and IKEA to develop sustainable products and solutions. 🌊 Despite the challenges, it’s clear that key players are setting the standard for the industry’s future. At RUBISKO, we’re all about building practical solutions that support and grow these industries. We’re ready for what’s next and excited to keep collaborating, innovating, and driving sustainable growth. #AgriTech #SeaweedInnovation #Sustainability #FutureOfFarming #RUBISKO #Innovation

Really excited to become a member of North Sea Farmers! Joining this network is a key step for RUBISKO as we continue to support the seaweed industry with our seaweed platform, KORA. North Sea Farmers offers a great space to connect, learn, and contribute to the future of seaweed farming. To learn more about KORA, please follow the link: https://lnkd.in/ea7entVF
RUBISKO joins North Sea Farmers! Rubisko started with Felix and Will, who both have backgrounds in agriculture. Will was working in indoor farming, and Felix was immersed in the seaweed industry. They noticed a big problem: many farms were managing their data with Excel and paper forms, which made it hard to make data-driven decisions. This was especially crucial for the seaweed industry, where you only have one learning cycle per year. They wanted to help farms use their data better, so they started a pilot project which eventually led to the development of KORA, a standardized seaweed management software.
