The Power of the Pause I often work with clients on raising their status, whether in interviews, personal branding, or their job search as a whole. One of the quickest and easiest ways to raise your status is to master the pause. This technique is especially powerful in an interview. After being asked a question, take 3-5 seconds to consider your response. This pause conveys that you're cool, calm, and confident in that environment. It also demonstrates that you’re thoughtful and deliberate, showing you won’t be rushed into giving a hasty answer. While this may feel uncomfortable at first, it’s worth practicing. Top Tip: Keep a glass of water handy. Taking a sip after a question gives you a natural way to create that pause. What are your go to strategies for raising your status, not just in the job search but in life?

Too often, I speak with people who have applied to hundreds of roles. This is something I strongly advise against. Applying to that many roles often indicates that you’re not targeting positions that truly align with your skills and experience. Instead, it suggests a scattergun approach where you’re applying indiscriminately rather than strategically. This method also implies that you’re not tailoring your CV for each application, something that is absolutely essential. Over 90% of the job seekers I speak with take the time to adjust their CV for each role, highlighting the most relevant experience and aligning it with the job requirements. If you’re not doing this, you’re already starting at a disadvantage. Here’s what I recommend: Define your priorities - Create a list of the key things you’re looking for in your next role (e.g., responsibilities, company culture, salary, location). Use this as your guide whenever you’re browsing job boards or LinkedIn. Be selective - It’s far better to apply for three well-suited roles each week—ones where you have proven experience and can demonstrate your value—than to apply for dozens of positions indiscriminately. Tailor your CV - For every application, ensure your CV showcases the skills and experiences that match the job requirements. This is non-negotiable if you want to stand out. Look to form a strategic approach to job seeking!

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful end to 2024. After taking some much-needed time off, I’m feeling refreshed and ready for an exciting and productive start to 2025! With many new connections made over the holiday period, I thought this would be a great time to introduce myself and share a bit more about what I do. I’m a Career Coach, specialising in helping individuals navigate their job search journey and land your next role! Before transitioning into coaching, I spent a decade in recruitment, partnering with mid-to-senior professionals across various industries, including IT/Change, Marketing Communications, Finance, and Renewable Energy. My experience spans both contract and permanent recruitment markets. During my tenth year in recruitment, I experienced a period of feeling unmotivated and unfulfilled, which began to impact other areas of my life. Taking a few months off to reflect on what I truly wanted from my career (and life) I made one of the best decisions of my life. I realised that what I loved most about my previous role was leading and developing teams, supporting people, and fostering growth. This clarity led me to pursue a coaching qualifications and transition into career coaching. Building on my recruitment experience, career coaching became a natural next step for me. Today, I work with individuals at all stages of their job search, whether they’re currently employed and searching for your next challenge or find yourself out work. My services are tailored to meet you, my ultimate goal being to help you secure your next role efficiently and effectively, all whilst passing on knowledge you can use for the rest of your career. (An investment into you and your career) Through my Job Search Strategy Programmes, I’ve achieved an 80% success rate, with clients landing a new role within four weeks of completing the programme. I draw on my extensive recruitment experience and personal insights to ensure every session delivers value and actionable strategies. If you’re interested in learning how I can support you in finding your next role, feel free to reach out—I’d be happy to provide more information! Wishing you all a happy and successful 2025! Celebrating success no 4: Run Club This is something I’m really proud of, even though it’s not directly related to coaching. Back in June, I started a Run Club in my hometown of Chippenham. The idea was simple: to give people an opportunity to get out of the house, meet new people, have some fun, and work on their fitness at the same time. For me, it also added a layer of accountability—knowing that every Wednesday, I had to show up and run around the park with others. We started with just two of us in June, but by the end of the summer, we were regularly welcoming 20 people. Together, we created a real community!

Celebrating Success No. 3: Back on Track It's easy to lose sight of our career ambitions. We become so focused on the day-to-day grind, and as life gets in the way, we often switch to autopilot, existing instead of thriving. This year, I've worked with several clients who felt exactly that, lost, unsure of what they wanted from their careers, and left feeling unmotivated. In some cases, this even affected other areas of their lives. One client, in particular, stands out. He had flew up the corporate ladder, reaching a director-level position in a relatively short time. While this was undoubtedly impressive, it left him with little opportunity to step back and consider: Is this really what I want? When we started working together, we explored what he wanted from life and filtered that down to his career. It turned out that, while he didn’t hate his job, there were other things he was passionate about trying. Through multiple sessions, we defined what that looked like and developed a plan. Fast forward, his side hustle is now up and running—and he’s already sold his first product! (Amazing progress in such a short time.) His plan? To grow the side hustle to the point where he can leave his well-paid, comfortable corporate position and pursue it full-time. This journey resonated with me, as it reminded me of my own path. I love working with ambitious, bright, and brave individuals, helping them rediscover their passion and drive, and getting them back on track.

Celebrating Success No. 2: Confidence Building Being out of work for a prolonged period can impact you in many ways. Perhaps the biggest challenge is a loss of confidence in your abilities: "No one wants me." "Am I actually any good at my job?" "I’m interviewing for roles I know I can do but keep getting rejected." I’ve heard these words from several clients this year. One client, in particular, stands out—a senior professional from a global business who had spent over 20 years with her previous employer before being made redundant earlier this year. Her confidence was shaken. She was feeling the strain of life without a job—losing structure, purpose, and income. We worked together to rebuild her confidence, starting by focusing on her impressive achievements and reminding her that redundancy is a business decision, not a reflection of her abilities. We created structure in her day, set actionable goals after each session, and worked on small, achievable milestones to consistently rebuild her confidence. She even took on a part-time job to regain a sense of purpose. The transformation was incredible. Watching her grow throughout JOBQUEST (my job search strategy programme) was one of the highlights of my year. She’s now landed a brilliant role in a new sector—one that challenges and excites her, exactly what she was looking for. I couldn’t be prouder of her journey—from where she started to where she is now.
