A few weeks ago, The Business Times Singapore—Southeast Asia’s leading financial paper—published my article, "Consumer goods companies neglect design at their own risk". Targeted at the business leadership community, the piece recalls how design can impact fundamental drivers of sustained business success. 💡 Writing about design as a strategic tool in business media was inspired by many recent conversations: on one hand, with fellow design leaders, about the on-going challenge of demonstrating the business value of design—particularly in light of recent divestments in design by large organizations; on the other hand, with business leaders and senior executives, who may primarily associate design with aesthetics and therefore do not fully grasp its importance or how and where it adds value to their organizations. 🤝 These conversations underscore the critical need to bridge the gap between design and business leadership. Design leaders must sharpen their business acumen to effectively contribute to the rational and analytical conversations that drive strategic decision-making. At the same time, they must further grow business leaders’ design acumen by clearly articulating how design’s actions and decisions connect to common business objectives across the different functions involved in the new product development process. Beyond the daily opportunities provided by projects, the design community must actively seek channels and forums to engage directly with the business world, fostering this mutual education. 🙏 Thank you to The Business Times for spotlighting this topic, and a special thanks to Karen Yap for her valuable support and guidance! Congratulations to Anna Brailsford for making the Kings New Years Honour list and being awarded an MBE for services to women's equality and diversity in coding. We're so fortunate to have spoken with Anna in 2023, as Co-Founder and CEO of Code First Girls she discussed her incredible career in Ed Tech, and what employers should be doing now to make real change in the Tech industry. Code First Girls has taught 100,000 women to code. They provide girls, women and non-binary people with free coding training and development, and their degree program pairs partner companies with outstanding female talent from the outset, so they can invest in their education and gain diverse, outstanding female talent for their teams, either as graduates or as they move from other roles and industries.
