  • It was reported this morning, 23 December 2024, that China was announcing new sanctions against two prominent Canadian human rights organisations. China has sanctioned these Canadian organisations in response to Canadian sanctions on China. Recently Canada sanctioned Chinese officials under the Special Economic Measures Act, accusing them of committing serious human rights violations against minority groups such as the Uyghurs in the Xinjiang province and the Tibetans in Tibet. The new sanctions from China target the Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project (URAP) and the Canada Tibet Committee and key figures of these organisations.  China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement declaring the sanctions were in direct response to Canada’s sanctions. Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project (URAP) work to raise awareness around human rights issues faced by Uyghur Muslims. Canada Tibet Committee works to advocate for the rights and freedoms of Tibetan people. This is not the first time sanctions on groups which advocated for ethnic minorities have been utilised by China. In the past, China has imposed similar sanctions on states, organisations and individuals which have publicly criticised its human rights record. The method can be seen as a part of China’s broader strategy of protecting public interests and preventing foreign interference in its internal policies. The executive director of the Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project, Mehmet Tohti has publicly stated his organisation accepts the sanctions, “as a badge of honour.” Canada Tibet Committee agreed with the URAP statement, reiterating the sanctions would not stop their advocacy of the Tibetan people. #sanctions #china #canada #xinjiang #tibet #uyghurs #human #rights #awareness #advocacy #news We hope you enjoyed this Sanctions SOS piece: At Sanctions SOS we offer Consultancy, Training and Capacity Building services for all your company and compliance needs. • Today, 19th December 2024, the United States (US) sanctioned Pakistan, focusing on the state's missile program. Four entities have been sanctioned by the Biden administration for what they say is the “continuing proliferation threat of Pakistan’s long-range missile development.” The National Development Complex (NDC), a state-run organisation in Pakistan has been targeted by these sanctions. It is reported the NDC are responsible for the creation and testing of ballistic missiles in the state, including missiles which could carry nuclear warheads. A statement released by the US disclosed that the NDC has worked to acquire items such as special vehicle chassis intended to be used as launch support equipment for these ballistic missiles, as well as other technologies to advance the missiles. Other companies sanctioned by the US in Pakistan include, Affiliates International, Akhtar and Sons Private Limited and Rockside Enterprise. Based in Karachi, these entities have been sanctioned for working with the NDC to buy equipment for Pakistan’s missile program. Speaking on the sanctions, State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller posted on X stating, “Today, the United States is designating four entities that are contributing to Pakistan’s ballistic missile program. We have been clear and consistent about our concerns, and we will continue to engage constructively with Pakistan on these issue.” Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement criticising the sanctions saying, “Pakistan considers the US decision to impose sanctions on NDC and three commercial entities as unfortunate and biased. Pakistan’s strategic capabilities are meant to defend its sovereignty and preserve peace and stability in South Asia.” Ultimately it appears the US’s aim with the sanctions is limiting the spread of nuclear weapons and proliferation, Pakistan on the other hand suggests the missile program is necessary for its self-defence. #sanctions #us #pakistan #ballistic #missiles #nuclear #biden #weapons #longrange #proliferation #news We hope you enjoyed this Sanctions SOS piece: At Sanctions SOS we offer Consultancy, Training and Capacity Building services for all your company and compliance needs. • It was reported today, 18 December 2024, that the US has sanctioned a UAE-based Chinese nationals over North Korean crypto laundering. The US has sanctioned two Chinese nationals based in the UAE and their front company for laundering millions of dollars in cryptocurrency stolen by North Korean cybercriminals. This money has been used to fund Pyongyang’s weapons programs. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated Lu Huaying and Zhang Jian who worked through a UAE-based front company to facilitate money laundering and cryptocurrency conversion services which funnelled illicit proceeds to North Korea. The two converted cryptocurrency into cash on behalf of Sim Hyon Sop, a North Korean banking executive who was previously sanctioned by the US. According to the US Treasury, between early 2022 and Sept 2023, Lu Huaying laundered virtual funds via North Korean cyber heists, worth several million dollars. IT worker schemes were also used as a method of converting the virtual funds to cash by using ‘money mules.’ This laundered money was then used to buy products and services for North Korea and its proxies. Green Alpine Trading LLC, a UAE-based front company was also sanctioned as a key point in the money-laundering network. Acting Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Bradley T. Smith said, “As the DPRK continues to use complex criminal schemes to fund its WMD and ballistic missile programs—including through the exploitation of digital assets—Treasury remains focused on disrupting the networks that facilitate this flow of funds to the regime,” adding, “The United States, along with the UAE and our other partners, will continue to target the financial networks that enable the Kim regime’s destabilizing activities.” For effective sanctions compliance, it is crucial to thoroughly vet financial and supply chains using a risk-based approach to ensure that no breaches have occurred and to proactively mitigate potential risks. #sanctions #sanctionsevasion #moneylaundering #dprk #china #uae #us #news We hope you enjoyed this Sanctions SOS piece: At Sanctions SOS we offer Consultancy, Training and Capacity Building services for all your company and compliance needs.
