About us

SATRA is an independent research and testing organisation established in 1919. It has technical facilities in the UK and China serving customers throughout the world. As well as testing products and components to European and international standards across a wide range of industry sectors, SATRA develops, manufactures and sells test equipment. SATRA is a Notified Body for various European directives including personal protection equipment (PPE), which is one of SATRA’s largest sector operations. SATRA has its own chemicals analysis laboratory for testing restricted substances in accordance with European REACH, and US chemicals regulations for which it is CPSC-accredited. SATRA is considered a leading technical authority for footwear and leather and companies from these industries can become members of SATRA to gain exclusive access to SATRA test methods, accreditation, consultancy, research facilities, technical training and factory production management systems. A number of SATRA systems are recognised in the supply chain as setting industry standards for quality and production efficiency. As well as the knowledge and experience of its technologists, what distinguishes SATRA is the volume of technical information it has published since 1935 in the form of magazines and books to help promote quality, excellence and professionalism throughout consumer products industries.     Our Footwear Foundations course is a great online tool for anyone wanting to gain a good introduction to the processes and materials involved in shoemaking. Twelve modules, plus an end-of-course review, cover subjects from design through to upper materials, soles, lasting and testing - all explained with audio narration, diagrams, videos and interactive quizzes.     New substances added to REACH candidate list. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has recently updated the REACH Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) to add six substances, summarised below: · Triphenyl phosphate (CAS: 115-86-6) - Used as a plasticiser and flame retardant, particularly in cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate · 6-[(C10-C13)-alkyl-(branched, unsaturated)-2,5-dioxopyrrolidin-1-yl]hexanoic acid (CAS: 2156592-54-8) - Used in hydraulic fluids, lubricants, greases and metal working fluids · O,O,O-triphenyl phosphorothioate (CAS: 597-82-0)- Used in hydraulic fluids, lubricants, greases and metal working fluids · Octamethyltrisiloxane (CAS: 107-51-7) - Used in cosmetic, personal care and cleaning products. Also used in coating products, adhesives and sealants · Perfluamine (CAS: 338-83-0) - Used in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, and in biological research. · Reaction mass of: triphenylthiophosphate and tertiary butylated phenyl derivatives (CAS: 192268-65-8)- Used in hydraulic fluids, lubricants, greases and metal working fluids The key substance to be aware of for consumer goods is Triphenyl phosphate, which is applicable to polymers and to materials which have a flame retardant treatment.
