As #COP29 concludes today, it is a timely moment to reflect on energy poverty in Africa and Savannah’s role in helping to support the continent's energy transition.  In addition to the energy initiatives launched by the COP29 presidency to further energy transition, the spotlight was also cast on the issue of energy poverty. As highlighted by the African Energy Commission of the African Union at COP29, over 83% of people in Sub-Saharan Africa still rely on traditional biomass fuels, leading to severe health, environmental, and economic repercussions. Africa is home to 18% of humanity but only 56% of her people are estimated to have access to grid connected electricity.   Access to energy is essential for economic development and human progress and is positively correlated with many other key human development metrics, including those associated with educational attainment, life expectancy and quality of life. Energy is a critical enabler of human activity.   At Savannah, our purpose it to meaningfully contribute to the economic development of the countries in which we operate in Africa through the development of businesses and projects that make a material difference to those countries. Energy poverty in Africa is the principal problem we are seeking to help solve which underpins our hydrocarbon AND renewable energy strategy. We firmly believe that Africa needs both if it is to be given the opportunity to grow.   As we support the energy transition in Africa, our gas is enabling approximately 20% of Nigeria’s thermal power generation capacity, while our growing Renewable Energy Division aims to deliver utility-scale renewable energy projects across Africa, generating clean, competitively priced energy for millions of households. We are targeting up to 1 GW+ of renewable energy projects in motion by end 2024 and up to 2 GW+ by end 2026.     Discover how Savannah is driving change and helping to make a significant impact on Africa's energy landscape in our 2023 Annual Report: https://bit.ly/47UPbqE

Today is Africa Industrialisation Day! This year, the United Nations calls on Africa to harness the transformative potential of technology and drive inclusive and environmentally conscious development and economic growth.   Access to energy is essential for economic development and human progress, with a strong correlation between GDP per capita and power consumption per capita. It is almost impossible for a country to meaningfully develop without access to power. Africa is home to 18% of humanity but only 56% of her people are estimated to have access to grid connected electricity. In Sub-Saharan Africa annual electricity consumption per person is estimated to be less than that consumed by a standard US household fridge and only 8% of what an average UK citizen is estimated to consume per year. As we navigate the energy transition in Africa, our gas is enabling approximately 20% of Nigeria’s thermal power generation capacity, while our growing Renewable Energy Division aims to deliver utility-scale renewable energy projects across Africa, generating clean, competitively priced energy for millions of households. This approach is underpinned by Pillar 1 of our sustainability strategy, “Promoting Socio-economic Prosperity”, aligned with nine of our chosen United Nations Development Goals. Pade Durotoye, Managing Director, Savannah, Nigeria, was a speaker at the 42nd Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (“NAPE”) Annual International Conference & Exhibition 2024 held in Lagos, Nigeria. Durotoye was on the panel to discuss the theme: “Changing Dynamics in Nigeria's Integrated Energy Sector: Impact on Sustainable Production and National Growth,” where he spoke about the challenges hindering gas development for the domestic market. He advocated increased investment in domestic gas development especially in non-associated gas. According to Durotoye: “The clock has yet to start on Non-Associated Gas (“NAG”) development. There is inadequate emphasis on advancing NAG development. Development projects with a domestic supply focus remain challenged. Without payment guarantees, the market has little chance of developing. And without developing the sector, we will be in trouble because domestic gas utilisation will be impacted.     He mentioned Savannah’s investment in domestic gas supply through its Accugas midstream subsidiary, which supplies gas enabling approximately 20% of Nigeria’s thermal power generation capacity, as an example of the kind of investment that Nigeria needs to meet its domestic gas supply target. #Savannah #AccugasLimited #NAPE2024 #NAPEAICE_42

In line with the second pillar of our sustainability strategy “Ensuring Safe and Secure Operations”, we have placed a substantial focus on enhancing Savannah’s operational safety through our training methodologies, combining the identification of specific training needs with the integration of external resources. This initiative is designed to elevate the skill set of our workforce, ensuring a well-prepared and safety-conscious team, and is in line with our chosen Pillar 2 United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals 3 – Good Health and Well-being and 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth.  In 2023, our people completed 4,988 health, safety and environment training hours, an almost five-fold increase over 2022, and earlier this year we introduced this as a new reporting metric going forward within our suite of annual sustainability reporting metrics.    Learn more about our efforts to strengthen our HSE&S culture in our 2023 Annual Report: https://bit.ly/47UPbqE
