Every day SEPA works to protect and enhance Scotland’s environment.

About us

Our purpose is to protect and improve the environment in ways that, as far as possible, also help create health and wellbeing benefits and sustainable economic growth. We are a non-departmental public body, accountable to Scottish Ministers and the Scottish Parliament, and an independent advisor on the environment. We have 1,2512 employees working in 22 offices, giving us a geographical presence across the whole of Scotland, from the Highlands and Islands to the Borders. We regulate and advise on a wide range of environmental activities. We help business and industry to understand and comply with their environmental responsibilities and legislation and have a range of enforcement powers which we can apply to ensure that regulations are complied with. We take tens of thousands of samples every year from land, water and air, analysing them in the field and in our laboratories to help assess the quality of our environment. Our services include: monitoring and reporting on the state of our environment, working with partners to promote sustainable resource use, environmental regulation, responding to environmental emergencies and providing a range of public warning systems, including our flood warning and guidance service and bathing water quality forecasts. We also operate the Radioactive Incident Monitoring Network and the Airborne Hazards Emergency Response service. We recognise the context we are working in as an environment protection agency is changing. A fundamental challenge for the 21st century is the over-use of resources and the need to find ways to create social and economic success within planetary constraints. For us, one example of this changing context is that whilst there are still compliance challenges, many of those we regulate are increasingly recognising the value of going beyond compliance. They recognise the positive outcomes that this can bring not just to the environment but to their business and the communities they operate in.

  • At SEPA, we are committed to tackling waste crime and holding those responsible to account. Our investigation into an illegal waste site in Aberdeenshire has resulted in multiple penalties, including a 150-hour community payback order, a £3,000 confiscation order, and an 18-month supervision requirement. Waste crime is not a victimless offence, it damages the environment, impacts communities, and can divert emergency services from critical work. Through detailed investigations and enforcement action, we continue to disrupt illegal waste activities and ensure compliance with clear regulation.   You can read more about this prosecution and our ongoing work to tackle waste crime at - https://lnkd.in/edKxsnSr

  • We are pleased to be working in partnership with Fife Council, Fife Coast & Countryside Trust and cbec eco-engineering UK & Europe on a new restoration project.   With the help of the Water Environment Fund, the project aims to rejuvenate a 5.8-kilometre stretch of the Back Burn, enhancing biodiversity, reducing flood risks, and creating improved greenspaces for the community.   We look forward to contributing our expertise to this transformative project. Following the successful restoration of the River Leven, an ambitious new project is underway to breathe life back into one of Fife’s cherished waterways. Partners Fife Council, SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency), and Fife Coast and Countryside Trust are joining forces to restore a 5.8-kilometre stretch of the Back Burn – also known locally as the Conland, Coul, and Balbirnie Burn – between Rhind Hill in the Lomond Hills and Newton, just north of Markinch. The Restoring the Back Burn project, a vital part of the wider Leven Programme, aims to return this historically significant waterway to a more natural state. Supported by funding from the Water Environment Fund (WEF) and Fife Council, the restoration will improve biodiversity, reduce flood risks, and create enhanced greenspaces for the community to enjoy. The project is now in its final design stage, with cbec eco-engineering appointed as technical designers. Drawing on expertise from the successful River Leven restoration, cbec is developing innovative designs to restore the Back Burn while respecting its cultural and historical significance. • Being passionately purposeful means more than just words, it’s what drives us every day. We’re united by shared commitment, to protect the environment, champion our work, and support our people.   We have recently developed our People Strategy, setting out our commitment to creating a workplace where people feel valued, supported, and empowered to make a difference.    A strong sense of purpose brings us together, but to truly thrive, we need the right environment. One where people can be themselves, grow their careers and balance their professional and personal lives. One where everyone belongs.   We are building that environment every day. A place where passion and purpose come together. A team driven by shared values, making a real impact on the world around us. To discover more about the commitments in our 3-year People Strategy, visit our website https://lnkd.in/ek7rKQ8m

  • This week, flooding experts from across the country have gathered in Edinburgh to discuss and advance the national Flood Resilience Strategy. With flooding becoming more frequent due to climate change, it is more important than ever to ensure we work collaboratively to help create flood-resilient communities.   Throughout the winter we have been advising the public to prepare and be aware. Following three vital steps. - Check the Scottish Flood Forecast for a 3-day outlook on areas at risk. - Sign up for Floodline alerts to receive local updates for your regular travel routes. - Follow SEPA on social media for real-time updates.   Learn more at sepa.scot/flooding

  • We're taking the next steps to create a simpler, integrated system for environmental regulation that's easier for businesses and individuals to navigate. In our latest consultation, we’re proposing changes to our guidance on how the public and other interested bodies can get involved in decisions about environmental authorisations. We’re also proposing changes to our guidance on how we determine whether a person is ‘fit and proper’ to hold a registration or permit. We want to hear your views. Your feedback will help us understand what matters most to you and how we can shape our guidance to deliver services that work for everyone while supporting the environment.
