Enabling young people to succeed

About us

Services for Young People is part of Hertfordshire County Council and delivers youth work projects and programmes, information, advice, guidance, work-related learning, outdoor education and other services to young people in Hertfordshire. Our Personal Advisers and Youth Workers are professionally trained to provide the highest level of support and work closely with partners to provide counselling, mentoring and access to other services. We run a wide range of youth work projects across the county in which young people can get involved. Through these projects they meet new people, learn new skills and take part in challenging opportunities. They are encouraged to develop their personal and social skills by taking part in activities including sports, drama, dance, music, workshops, outdoor education, DofE, forums, residentials and volunteering. We help young people with the issues which are important to them such as jobs, careers and education, relationships, sexual health, confidence, self-esteem, substance misuse, staying safe, housing and independent living skills.

Following on from a post earlier in the week, we took part in the second Generation Hertsmere careers fair on Wednesday, organised by Hertsmere Borough Council in partnership with Hertfordshire Futures. This provided young people with information about local career opportunities and connected them with employers. Members of our team gave young people impartial careers guidance to help them understand their career paths, find resources to support their future, and talked to them about our services. Honoured to have presented the Hertfordshire Services for Young People Awards last night! Congratulations to all the remarkable young people who received awards this year. Hearing about the achievements and challenges these young people have overcome—with the support of our dedicated Youth Workers and Advisers—was incredibly inspiring. Their resilience and hard work demonstrate what’s possible when young people have the right guidance and opportunities. It was especially wonderful to meet two award winners from Hertsmere, whose accomplishments are a testament to the strength and potential of young people across our community. Hertfordshire County Council’s Services for Young People is committed to empowering young people to succeed by offering youth work projects, career guidance, outdoor education, and more. Through a variety of programmes, from sports and arts to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, we help young people develop essential life skills, build confidence, and make lasting connections within their communities. Last night’s awards represent just a glimpse of the thousands of lives our services touch each year. A heartfelt thank you to all our Youth Workers, Advisers, and community partners who make this positive impact possible. We were thrilled to be involved in celebrating three years of Generation Hertsmere yesterday, organised by Hertsmere Borough Council. SfYP Advisers, Youth Workers and one of our Employment and Skills Coordinators were on hand to talk to students about careers, answer their queries, provide information on next steps, and signpost young people to our services. It was great to network with employers and discuss potential for future work experience placements and other work-related learning opportunities. Celebrating Three Years of Generation Hertsmere! Three years ago, I was incredibly proud to launch Generation Hertsmere, and today it was fantastic to be part of this inspiring event once again. Seeing it go from strength to strength each year is a real testament to the commitment of our local employers and schools. Generation Hertsmere continues to connect young people with the incredible career opportunities right here in our community and is all about equipping young people with essential skills and insights into the diverse career paths available locally. Today, employers from across Hertsmere—including Elstree Studios, Fairbank (BBC), Hertfordshire County Council, Griggs, Hertsmere Borough Council, TLC, Services for Young People and many more, showcased career opportunities and spoke to students about the routes into these varied roles. This fantastic event, organised by Hertsmere Council, especially the amazing Lesley Crisp, also includes a Twilight session giving young people and their parents a relaxed space to engage with local businesses. Hundreds of students from local schools and colleges attended to explore careers and connect directly with employers. These interactions are invaluable, helping young people gain meaningful insights into the working world and discover the diverse jobs available within their community. Special thanks to all the schools, students, and businesses who came together to make this event such a success. It’s inspiring to see so many young people actively planning for their futures. Hertsmere is full of opportunity, and Generation Hertsmere is proud to bring those opportunities to the next generation!
