It often seems like everyone on LinkedIn is claiming to be an Angel investor. 👼 Today, Founders Capital held a great event aimed at demystifying how best to invest in what remains a poorly understood asset class for most of us. What's the point though? In a world where founders and even farmers 👨🌾 🐄 are losing their tax incentives, Angel investing remains a super tax efficient way (in the UK) to invest in companies that could have a hugely positive future impact on the wider economy (and world 🌎). However, big potential upsides come with the reality that the vast majority of startups don't make it. So beyond the hype and the bravado, here are some useful takeaways I got out of today's session: 💸 Only invest what you are willing (and can afford) to lose 📈 Have a strategy and stick to it 🦣 Spread risk by having a larger portfolio (at least 10-20 companies) 🍔 Meet with founders and trust your gut 🧐 Be cautious about follow on investment (re-investing in the same company) 🚰 Be prepared to be diluted 60-80% if you're an early stage investor in a unicorn 🍽️ De-risk by taking money off the table in future rounds, you don't always have to wait for the moon shot.
