  • SYRIA: SIGNIFICANT SECURITY, CONFLICT RISKS WILL LIKELY CHALLENGE TRANSITIONAL GOVERNMENT IN Q1 2025 Following the ousting of the former Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, and the mass surrender of the Syrian Armed Forces (SAF) on 8 December, the new HTS-led transitional government has started to consolidate its control over the former government’s territories. In our latest Special Report, we assess that the HTS-led transitional government will almost certainly continue to consolidate its control over Syria, though security challenges will drive crime and armed conflict risks through early 2025. It will also likely seek to bolster foreign support through the pursuit of moderate policies in Q1 2025, though this will drive the risk of Islamist backlash and radicalisation. These regional updates form part of Sibylline's World Risk Register (WRR) service, for which we are currently offering an extensive free trial until January 2025. • BRIEFING: THE FALL OF AL-ASSAD RULE: WHAT’S NEXT FOR SYRIA AND THE REGION? On 8 December, the opposition forces led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group took control of the capital Damascus, only 11 days after launching an unprecedented offensive that swept through the Syrian government's territories. On the same day, former president Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia where he was granted asylum. Subsequently, Mohammed al-Bashir, the former Prime Minster of the Idlib-based government, was appointed Prime Minister-designate of the Syrian Transitional Government. The transitional government faces myriad security challenges following the collapse of Assad's rule. In the north clashes between Turkish-backed militias and the Kurds continue and will possibly escalate. In the south, Israel has launched a military incursion into the Quneitra governorate and is escalating airstrikes against key facilities associated with the former Syrian Armed Forces, while the US-led collation attacks tens of IS targets in central Syria. Join our analysts who will assess prospects for stability in Syria and implications for the wider region here: https://lnkd.in/eiMVzQj2 When registering for the event, please be aware that we do not accept personal email addresses. When registering, please use a corporate email address. If you are unable to register with a corporate email address, please email events@sibylline.co.uk. #RefinedInsight #Syria #MENA #MiddleEast
