How can shipping minimise Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) and enhance energy efficiency? In a recent episode of the The Economist’s Babbage podcast, Dr Tom Smith of UCL talks about how air lubrication systems (ALS) have the greatest potential to do both.        The mitigation of URN is an area of growing research, and ALS a key technology being explored for its effectiveness. The air introduced by ALS can mask shipborne noise emitted through the flat bottom and significantly reduce noise levels generated by the propeller. At the same time, ALS reduces frictional resistance between the water and the hull surface, cutting net fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions. Silverstream was proud to take part in the highly anticipated Pudong Shipping Week in Shanghai, China, earlier this month.     Our colleagues in China engaged in pivotal discussions on the future of maritime decarbonisation and innovation. They also had the opportunity to hear insights from international representatives, local governments, and transport ministers, including the Vice-Mayor of Pudong, Mr Xu Xin, who highlighted the significance of Shanghai for global trade.     As the world’s leading shipbuilding nation, China remains a cornerstone of Silverstream’s growing presence in Asia. Last week, we were pleased to attend the UK-China Green Maritime Exchange for the third consecutive year. The event – led by the Department for Business and Trade’s (DBT) Maritime team – featured a collaborative forum, which focused on green technologies, energy-saving solutions, and maritime decarbonisation strategies. It sparked productive discussions about how the Silverstream® System contributes to maritime decarbonisation. In addition to the forum, the event included a networking dinner where the team, including Stephen Potts, Alex Bowman, Gilberto Zambrini, Lucas Lu and Andrew Starforth met with over 50 maritime representatives, building on our strong connections in the Chinese shipping market. #shipsandshipping #decarbonisation #airlubrication
