A truly incredible day at ‘Education for Patient Safety; Involving patients in our learning to improve patient outcomes’ at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust on Friday. I had the privilege of being invited to present "Patient engagement and co-production: creating an authentic learning culture". Eleven case study examples of collaborative work between SimComm Academy and healthcare organisations and universities were shared, in which patient engagement and co-production was the bedrock. The eleven ‘case studies’ were examples of harnessing the authenticity of simulation with ‘real people’ (simulated patients, actor role players), and covered these three areas: ✏️ Listening and translating individual and group experiences ✏️ Translating experiences highlighted in government reports ✏️ Involving communities in change, then listening and acting on their feedback All the speakers were unanimous in the belief that involving patients, service users and their advocates, in our educational processes lead to better outcomes and a truly patient-centred approach to care. It was a day filled with thought-provoking discussions and practical examples of patient involvement in healthcare education, we are all inspired to take this further. I’ve been reflecting on a recent debate:“ Is technology in simulation worth it?” at the Wessex Medical Education Conference 2024! I had the honour of leading a thought-provoking discussion with Dr. Emma Grainger-Allen and Dr. James Edelman, two brilliant minds exploring the impact of technology on simulation-based learning in healthcare. The discussion provoked some key take aways: • How low and high technology simulation approaches benefit patient care. • The resources required to ensure the sustainability of low and high simulation technology in the long term • Approaches that provide educational benefit which could not have been achieved with an alternative approach • Groups of learners that low and high technology approaches are most suited to • Exploration of the costs associated with low and high technology simulation Simulation is such a powerful tool for improving patient care, and these discussions remind us that it’s not just about technology—it’s about being open minded to which approaches are best suited for the learning event. Thank you to everyone at the conference for the engaging conversations and for pushing the boundaries of medical education. We thoroughly enjoyed running our “Leadership Development” simulation workshop for band 6 staff working in a range of specialities at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. The course included a variety of simulation methods including forum theatre and fishbowl simulation with scenarios covering a range of topics: ☀️ Managing difficult conversations ☀️ What leadership beyond being a clinical expert looks like ☀️ Navigating the line between being a team member and a manager ☀️ Effective communication skills as a leader #leadershipdevelopment #communicationskills #simulationtraining #forumtheatre #actorroleplayers
