As we remember the reason why Slow The Flow exists and the impact of the devastating Boxing Day floods of 2015 and as we head into 2025, our 10th year, our hugely important work to slow the flow continues. Every month, we publish our excellent newsletter which celebrates the work our trustees, volunteers and partners do to educate our communities about flood risk and what we can all do to protect ourselves, our neighbours, friends and families. Please do take 10 minutes on this Boxing Day to see what we do and how you can help……. https://lnkd.in/eMYcBnCU From us all at Slow The Flow, have a wonderful New Year! New thinking at Mansfield District Council 🙌 £76M Mansfield sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) scheme; the UK’s largest SuDS retrofit will bring endless benefits to communities, alleviate the growing risk of flooding, and make Mansfield cleaner and greener. It signals good news for the rest of the country as sustainable drainage system (SuDS) retrofit could be absorbed into similar projects, wouldn't it be great do this here in Calderdale?? Lets make it happen Yorkshire Water https://lnkd.in/epVQWGiH

Slow The Flow is glad that money is being spent on reducing combined sewer overflows, but we hope to see at least as much investment forthcoming from Yorkshire Water and Environment Agency in nature-based solutions, which provide additional benefits including flood alleviation, biodiversity, and public amenity, as well as water quality. They can also represent significantly better value in terms of money and carbon costs. https://lnkd.in/eue44yf9

Why peat is important for slowing water? In our latest blog Slow The Flow’s Patron, Jack Wallington, writes about the importance of peat for battling both causes and effects of climate change. Peat has become a hot topic around the world because peatlands are rare and important habitats that support unique wildlife while the peat itself absorbs huge quantities of atmospheric carbon. But peatlands are at risk due to human activity. So, what exactly is peat and how does it work? And why is it important for slowing the flow of water? 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eNnSUMUG #slowtheflow #peat #naturalfloodmanagement #calderdale Amanda McDermott Adrian Horton Ben Fenton 2B Landscape Consultancy Ltd Yorkshire Water Flood Innovation Centre
