Chile is addressing climate change and water conflicts by investing in desalination and, crucially, collaborating with local communities. This is especially important for regions like the Central Region, which has faced a "mega drought" since 2010. While desalination is considered the best solution in response to the growing water scarcity problem, there are concerns about its application and environmental impact. That’s why community involvement needs to be at the heart of any desalination strategy. Local communities should be engaged in the design and monitoring of desalination plants, ensuring their concerns are addressed. This collaboration helps balance water needs with environmental protection. Read more about both the concerns and solutions for a desalination process, including a shining best practice example featuring the partnership between Aguas Pacífico and the Bahía Narau Fishermen's Federation: https://lnkd.in/exmeNM8q #MakingSustainabilityHappen #Desalination #WaterManagement #ClimateAction #CommunityEngagement #Chile

A week back at our desks post the annual United Nations 13th Forum on Business and Human Rights, and here are our some of our key takeaways: What a privilege to witness and be part of the energy in the room! The Forum showcased the power of a platform for engagement, discussion, and debate which accommodates in one place the diverse perspectives of rights holders, civil society, investors, governments, and business. We felt as though we are witnessing a paradigm shift in the field of Human Rights, moving beyond normative voluntary frameworks and good practice principles to a future of mandatory requirements and hard law around due diligence, disclosure, and reporting on human rights risk and impact management - with laws like the EUDR and CSDDD driving accountability. The enduring relevance of the UNGPs as a framework to analyse human rights risks in complex supply chains was a recurring theme, even as we navigate new and awaited legislations. Whilst large corporations may have come a long way since the UNGPs were introduced, there is still a big difference between what sustainability teams are communicating and how their procurement teams are operating. Understanding the impacts of purchasing practices is key to unlocking meaningful engagement in value chains. Without it, lots of the work sustainability teams are doing may be lost. A message that was driven home at every session was the importance of effecting meaningful stakeholder engagement. Rightsholders should be shaping the programmes that businesses are creating, not just providing feedback on them. Supporting our clients to tackle the practical challenges of transposing and implementing policy and guiding frameworks by embedding respect for human rights robustly in their businesses, portfolios, and supply chains lies on our horizon for 2025 and beyond. Many thanks to the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights for organising this insightful event. #UNForumBHR #bizhumanrights #esg

The global energy transition is driving the need for substantial investment into critical raw materials such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese. As such, SLR has collaborated with the Green Purposes Company (GPC), which is a shareholder in the Green Investment Group, to collate a report recommending what is required to unlock private capital, while ensuring robust ESG standards and safeguards are integrated across the supply chain. Read the full report - https://lnkd.in/eSqKHn-x Yesterday SLR held a webinar with the GPC to highlight the key findings of the report, and to discuss the challenges and opportunities for investing sustainably in energy transition minerals. If you missed it, you can catch up on the webinar recording below. Or visit our website - https://lnkd.in/e4JvwZxD - to read a run down of the Q&A with our guest Paul Ekins (Professor of Resources and Environmental Policy, UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources and Green Purposes Company Trustee).
