ARTEMIS-Flex takes to the mountains of Bulgaria. Vitosha Montain (near Sofia) – February 2025 In another world’s first, Smith Myers award winning, lifesaving ARTEMIS-Flex Mobile Phone Detection Location System (MPDLS) took to its new duties with The Bulgarian Civil Aviation Administration (CAA) and the Bulgarian Mountain Rescue Service. ARTEMIS-Flex will be used in SAR missions for missing aircraft, as well as other mountain rescue operations in the Bulgarian mountains. “It was great to have the opportunity to train members of Mountain Rescue Service and see them putting ARTEMIS-Flex through its paces by testing in very realistic scenarios prior to putting the system into service” said Paul McKenna (Mac), Smith Myers Training Manager. The ARETMIS-Flex system showcased its unmatchable versatility by being utilized in a 4x4 vehicle, quickly adapted into a mountain rescue backpack system and then, being mounted on a mountain rescue Skidoo for different operations. “We are confident that this will lead to more lives saved” said Emil Neshev, who is the head of the Bulgarian Mountain Rescue Service. “Having the ability to quickly adapt the system for different operations is key for our success and flexibility” he went on. 🇮🇹 15° Stormo, dove volano i “Lord” (15th Wing, where the “Lords” fly) Flying to Save Lives: 15th Wing "Angels" of the Italian Air Force, a history of the famous Italian SAR wing. Smith Myers ARTEMIS Mobile Phone Detection and Location System (MPDLS) featured in an article on respected Italian media platform The Aviation (link in comment below) Reduced down from the feature that covers crew, training, missions, aircraft, technology….Meet the "Angels" of the 15th Wing, our helicopters fly day and night, in all weather, over mountains and sea, without interruption. The dedicated crew, always ready, operates under the Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) of Poggio Renatico, providing 24/7 support. Tasks from the RCC trigger immediate action—60 minutes for daytime and 120 minutes at night. Missions included rescuing people from rooftops with the recent floods that have hit the territory near the Wing in northern Italy, such as Liguria or Emilia Romagna. Our standard crew includes a pilot, crew chief, second pilot, onboard operator, air rescuer (ARS), and a second operator for ground preparation and maintenance. Every mission requires precise coordination and the right equipment for marine or terrestrial environments. Timing is everything in air rescue, and flexibility is key. Missions can change rapidly, so our training ensures we're prepared for any scenario, adapting to weather conditions, patient needs, and team interactions. We utilize Smith Myers' Artemis system, which precisely locates mobile phones even in low coverage areas, reducing the operator's workload and enhancing SAR operations. The system works with 2G to 5G networks and is adaptable to any aircraft or vehicle. The Artemis system is manufactured and marketed by Smith Myers, a British company, with 35 years of experience in cellular radio systems, RF linear power amplifiers and is specialized in the design and production of telephone device tracking systems during search and rescue (SAR) operations. The company operates in the civil and military sectors and is partnered with numerous civilian and government agencies, armed forces and police around the world. Its function is to precisely locate mobile phones in large search areas and narrow the field to a few meters using two small antennas automatically thanks to its own geo-location technique based on GPS and the protocol of 2G (GSM), 3G (UMTS), 4G (LTE) and 5G (NR) mobile phones. This allows for less workload on board for the operator who can devote himself to other instruments during SAR operations It works, as already mentioned, even where coverage is low or even absent, such as in areas devastated by events or in the open sea, and can send and receive SMS. The Artemis system is adaptable to any aircraft, fixed-wing, rotary-wing, manned and unmanned and on land vehicles. Join us in celebrating these heroes who make the impossible possible! #Rescue #Helicopters #SAR #SmithMyers #Teamwork #Heroes #SavingLives #Italy

Helping save lives is what we do...In a remarkable rescue operation, a 66-year-old hiker from Varese, missing in the Valgrande area, was found injured but alive, thanks to Smith Myers Communications Ltd ARTEMIS systems. The hiker had been missing since Sunday, Nov. 17. Despite intensive search efforts by rescue teams, he remained unlocated until the intervention of the Drago 150 helicopter from the Fire Brigade of the Lombardy Flight Department. This state-of-the-art Leonardo helicopter is equipped with the award-winning Smith Myers ARTEMIS Mobile Phone Detection and Location System (MPDLS), which once again played a decisive role in another successful rescue for the Fire Brigade. On the morning of Nov. 19, favorable weather conditions allowed the deployment of the Drago 150 helicopter. Utilizing the ARTEMIS system, the helicopter was able to locate the missing hiker’s mobile phone, even in the challenging terrain of Valgrande. The system’s ability to locate phones using 2G through to the latest 5G networks enabled the rescue team to locate the exact position. The rescue teams were promptly directed to missing hiker’s location, where they found him injured but alive. He was immediately provided with medical assistance and transported to the hospital in Novara, where he is currently receiving care. “This marks another successful rescue operation in Italy for ARTEMIS, and underscores the critical importance of advanced technology in search and rescue missions,” said Andrew Munro, managing director, Smith Myers. “Together with our Italian partners Omnia Rep, we are honored to support the Italian Fire Brigade search-and-rescue teams with our ARTEMIS.” Recently selected for several major UK, European and North American SAR and Coast Guard Programs, ARTEMIS provides a new and mission critical capability to aircrew/first responders and is deployed globally in Maritime Patrol, Border Control, Aerial Firefighting and Natural Disasters. This most recent Italian rescue follow just days after another successful rescue of a father and son from perilous blizzard conditions in Norway. #smithmyers #artemis #omnia #MPDLS #SAR #savinglives #Italy
