Do you know which buildings are most likely to need specialised smoke control systems in place? Multi-storey buildings such as shopping centres, sport arenas and airports, large single storey buildings such as factories and warehouses, buildings with occupants who are less able to escape - such as hospitals, buildings with atria (modern office buildings) and car parks where gas and fume extraction is required. Smoke ventilation systems are critical to ensure the safety of occupants in the event of a fire. The Government has published a green paper to kickstart delivery of its modern Industrial Strategy, a 10‐year plan designed to drive economic growth across the country. ❌ ICYMI, Collaborative Reporting for Safer Structures (CROSS)-UK has issued a critical Safety Alert titled “Smoke vents rendered inoperable by building work.” This alert is rated Red – the highest level on CROSS’s traffic light system – and is the first Red Alert issued since 2022. This Alert draws attention to the safety risks associated with preventing the operation of smoke vents, in particular Automatic Opening Vents (AOVs), by construction work on existing buildings. After being withdrawn as a result of the General Election, the draft legislation to amend the Reporting on Payment Practices and Performance Regulations to introduce new metrics on retentions has now been re-laid by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT). Large companies will be required to publish particular information as part of their payment reports every six months. Over the last six months, HMRC has made a number of changes to the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS), including: Compliance with VAT obligations has been added to the Gross Payment Status compliance test which means if businesses do not comply with their VAT requirements, then HMRC can ultimately remove or refuse Gross Payment Status. Most landlord to tenant payments for construction work are no longer within the scope of the CIS. There is now a digital form to register as a Subcontractor and make Gross Payment Status applications. How often should I service my smoke control system? There are a number of maintenance checks that must be performed on a routinely basis from daily, weekly, monthly and so on…The critical factor here is the person doing these checks must be adequately trained.  The SCA website has many useful guides to help in a number of areas, along with our members who are best placed to help you with the latest knowledge and solutions.
