    Chief Executive at Social Finance

🗞️ Some personal news! 🗞️ After 11 amazing years at Social Finance - and the past three as CEO - I've decided it's time to pass the baton on to new leadership. Leading a team focused on making lasting and widespread change in complex, enduring issues in society pretty much guarantees there will never be a quiet day. It's been such a privilege to work with wonderfully talented and passionate people to knock down every obstacle in the way of achieving better outcomes and a fairer world. In my personal journey, I feel lucky to have worked with such outstanding people to build our practice around health and employment. From launching the world's first Social Impact Bond in mental health and employment, the Mental Health and Employment Partnership (#MHEP), to building IPS Grow, I saw how Social Finance and its partners can bring innovation to scale and change thousands of lives. The MHEP programme is finally wrapping up after nine years and over 2,000 people supported into work, perhaps a signal that it's time for me to wrap up my time here too! The past few years have been a rollercoaster for everyone, with a pandemic, fragile economy, and turbulent political landscape. I’m proud of how we’ve navigated these rough seas, and of where we've landed – with a strong business, an amazing team, and a new strategy for both our UK and International work. I'm delighted that Caroline Gadd, who currently leads our Data & Digital practice, will take the reins as Interim CEO in January. Caroline is a brilliant leader with a deep commitment to our mission. Social Finance is in great hands with her at the helm. I'll be staying on as an adviser for a while to support the transition. I'll also take some time to think about what's next for me as I reflect on how I can best contribute to tackling some of the big challenges of our time. It wouldn’t be a LinkedIn leaving post without some big thank yous to those who helped me on this journey. At risk of missing out so many, thank you to Toby Eccles, David Hutchison and Fiona Miller Smith for taking a punt on me back in 2013 and for your leadership of Social Finance; to Ben Jupp for being the best guide and mentor anyone could hope for; and to David Blood for your support and guidance to me personally over the past three years and to Social Finance through our history. To every single member of the Social Finance team, past and present, and to our many amazing partners, thank you for your friendship, your ideas, your sweat, and your willingness to take some wild swings to bring incredible things to life. There is so much more to do - I can't wait to see the lasting change that Social Finance and our partners make happen next.

National research shows there are limited specialist interventions for perpetrators from LGBT+ communities and the current referral pathways are not sufficient. The Drive Partnership is working to address this gap through an innovative approach. As a partner within The Drive Partnership, Social Finance is committed to this opportunity to close systemic gaps in responses to domestic abuse. #domesticabuse

We’re pleased to announce that we will be launching a Grant Fund application process seeking a delivery partner to trial a new programme for those who harm in LGBT+ communities on Monday 2 December. We welcome sector-wide applications, particularly from by-and-for orgs. Designed collaboratively by LGBT+ professionals and by-and-for organisations, the trial will aim to create meaningful change as part of our wider mission to close systemic gaps in responses to domestic abuse.    The trial is part of a wider, growing trend of work in this area, and we welcome applications from partnerships and encourage innovative proposals on how your service might deliver the trial. Please look out for full details and how to apply on Monday 2 December 2024!

It was great to see young carers, a group often forgotten, highlighted in Wednesday’s Westminster Hall debate on barriers to educational opportunity and we welcome recognition from Department for Education Minister Janet Daby of the barriers that young carers face to education in her response. Thanks in particular to Mark Sewards MP and to the Chair of the APPG for Young Carers and Young Adult Carers, Chris Vince MP, for raising awareness of the barriers young carers face related to issues like school absenteeism and inconsistent identification and support. Our Caring and Classes report highlighted the numerous barriers faced by young carers and young adult carers in education. We found that 2022/23, young carers missed on average more than a month of their education (23 days of school), compared to 14 days for other pupils. Almost one in four young carers also said there is no support for young carers in their school, college or university. It was great to see reference to key recommendations from this report, including the consideration that young carers should be added to daily attendance reporting in schools, for the government to consider introducing a Young Carers Pupil Premium, and that support for young carers should be the expected standard across all educational providers.

Too often Young Carers have to make an impossible choice between their caring responsibilities and their education. At the MYTIME Young Carers Education Summit today our Director Sara Jones (left hand side of photo) shared the stage with Tom Hayes MP, who spoke about his own childhood caring for both his parents and how it has inspired him to champion Young Carers. Krista Cartlidge the CEO of MYTIME Young Carers highlighted some of the concerning statistics from their new report, Overlooked and Overburdened: Addressing the Educational Challenges Faced By Young Carers (link in comments) with the audience of headteachers & Young Carer Champions, including: 🔹 40% of young carers experience suspensions during their schooling—more than double the rate of their peers at just 17% 🔹 Young carers in secondary school are less likely to pass GCSE English and Maths, and significantly less likely to achieve the highest scores (5+ and 7+). Commenting on the report Sara said "The case studies set out here clearly demonstrate by correctly identifying Young Carers, schools are able not only to understand their needs but can also unlock their skills and creativity. Social Finance and our partners in the Early Inclusion Collective support the recommendations made by MYTIME in this report, as together we work to build safer systems for children". We've all had a weekend to digest the Budget news, but at Social Finance we're incredibly excited by the government's announcement that it's setting up a social impact investment vehicle to help achieve its mission. 💼 Social Finance has been mobilising social investment to tackle complex and enduring challenges in society, both in the UK and globally, since our founding in 2007. We passionately believe in the power of social investment to drive better outcomes. That's why we launched the worlds first Social Impact Bond, now known as a social outcomes contract, in 2010. Today, we're still pioneering social investing in areas such as health and social care to drive transformation of services, better outcomes for people and communities, and improved value for the state. At a time when government needs to make the best use of every pound, this initiative is an incredibly exciting way of unlocking capital to change systems and change lives. #socialinvesting #impactinvesting #outcomes #impactinvesting #outcomescontracts Adam Swersky Nadine Smith Katy Saunders
