Sonichem (formerly Bio-Sep) driving the sustainable chemicals of the future
About us
Sonichem biorefinery technology, developed by Bio-Sep is an ultra-clean way to convert low-value woody biomass (e.g. sawdust) into high-value green chemicals lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose sugars. The technology is being demonstrated on an industrial-scale pilot plant, whilst the company are developing plans to design and build a commercial biorefinery in the year ahead.

🌿 Exciting News from Sonichem! 🌿 We're thrilled to share a feature by UKTN that highlights our innovative journey towards a sustainable future. At Sonichem, we're transforming sawdust and woodchips into natural alternatives to essential chemicals, aiming to significantly reduce our reliance on fossil fuel-derived products. Our goal? To open our first commercial plant by 2027 in Scotland, processing up to 15,000 tonnes of forestry material annually. This initiative is a crucial step as the UK government strives to move beyond fossil fuels. The demand for sustainable alternatives is urgent, particularly in industries like cosmetics, packaging, and pharmaceuticals, which heavily depend on petrochemical ingredients. A study from McMaster University revealed that the pharma industry alone emits more carbon than the automotive sector! Supported by a feasibility study funded by the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre with the University of Glasgow, our patented ultrasound process is breaking new ground. Our chief chemist, Andrew West, emphasizes the potential of lignin—a natural polymer—as a versatile and sustainable alternative in countless applications. As we look to the future, our focus is on collaborating with manufacturers and the forestry sector to ensure a sustainable supply chain that supports our innovative technology and global net-zero goals. Read more about our journey and the impact of this project here: #SustainableChemistry #Innovation #Biotechnology #Sonichem #CleanTech
Can sawdust replace petrochemicals? 🔎 A clean tech startup is converting sawdust and woodchips into natural alternatives to essential chemicals in an effort to reduce the reliance on fossil fuel-derived products. Scotland-based Sonichem is working towards opening its first commercial plant in 2027, aiming to process up to 15,000 tonnes of forestry material a year as the UK government looks to move beyond dependence on fossil fuels and their associated products. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e6FrDkQw 🔗 #sawdust #government #fossilfuels #forestry #manufactoring #UKtech

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending an Engineering Biology investment networking breakfast at No. 10 Downing Street. Hosted by the Minister for Science, Research and Innovation, Andrew Griffith MP, and the Minister for Investment, Lord Dominic Johnson of Lainston, it was an engaging gathering. The event brought together a dynamic mix of investors, innovative companies like Sonichem, and Colorifix, with inspiring leaders like Richard L. of Holiferm, industry associations such as the BioIndustry Association (BIA) alongside government officials involved in both policy and investment. We all engaged in robust discussions about the future of engineering biology, one of the UK’s five critical technologies driving science advancements. 🚀 It was an open forum that underscored the necessity of investment and support for #scalingup, refining the biomass policy to align with the goals of #engineeringbiology and prioritize embedded carbon in high-value #biobased chemical applications over energy production. We also explored and building academic science parks with Lorraine Kerr and further enhancing connections between the #Agtech community and downstream technologies for a truly circular economy . 🌍 #EngineeringBiology #SustainableFuture #Innovation #SciencePolicy #CircularEconomy
