Today in the Daily Mirror, Marissa Begonia, Mimi Jalmasco and Grace from The Voice of Domestic Workers share with Ros Wynne-Jones their experiences of abuse from employers and how they are now working to protect other women from #ModernDaySlavery. Both are part of our #VODWFutureVoices programme in partnership with The Voice of Domestic Workers. In the article, Marissa Begonia highlights a key issue: the National Referral Mechanism (NRM), the current system for identifying victims of trafficking, is no longer fit for purpose. Instead, this failing system leaves migrant domestic workers vulnerable to further exploitation and abuse. The Voice of Domestic Workers is campaigning to reform the system and restore all protections against #ModernDaySlavery. Our #VODWFutureVoices programme is dedicated to empowering migrant domestic workers by helping them build the skills and confidence to advocate for themselves and influence change in the fight against modern-day slavery. You can read more about their journey and experiences in their blogs here: https://lnkd.in/eq_syVvq Thank you also to our partners City Bridge Foundation, Trust for London. and Paul Hamlyn Foundation for supporting this vital work. On Sunday, on the 25th Anniversary of the military ‘gay ban’ being lifted, Craig Jones MBE from our Spokesperson Network appeared on BBC Breakfast alongside other LGBT veterans to reflect on their experiences. Craig and the team at Fighting With Pride - LGBT+ Military Charity have tirelessly campaigned to seek out reparations for LGBT veterans who’ve lost careers, livelihoods, mental health and friends to the historic ban. The government issued a formal apology in 2023 and in 2024 issued £75 million in financial compensation for veterans affected by the ban. Founder of Bridging Barriers - Helping employers to access work-ready diverse talent and underrepresented young people to achieve career success
This. Is. Crazy. I’ve been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) by the King and I’m on the 2025 New Years Honours List 🤯 I recently got a letter in the post. At first I was thinking no way have I got another speeding ticket - I opened it only to read that I have been recommended by the Prime Minister to the King to be on the 2025 New Years Honours List and receive a British Empire Medal (BEM). I had so many questions. Firstly, what is that? What’s a BEM? I’ve googled it and I’m seeing things like MBE and OBE come up as it’s something similar. What?! Me? Secondly, How? Recommended by the Prime Minister? Awarded a British Empire Medal by the King? Man, I was lost for words. All glory to King Jesus man, seriously. The list came out on 30th December and I’m on the same list as the likes of Gareth Southgate and Jacqueline Wilson? Oi man! Two years ago, I made the bold decision to turn down the offer of going down the 9-5 route and focus on working on Bridging Barriers full time. At a time where we had no money, I said no to job security, worked for free and lived off savings just so I could focus on building Bridging Barriers and bringing this God given vision to life. If I begin to list out all that we’ve achieved since then, you’ll think I’m bragging and in fact, it will overwhelm me, so all I can say is thank you God. I’ve never done the work I do for rewards or recognition, but when a commitment to transforming the lives of young people in your community is acknowledged, it really is a great feeling and a huge blessing. I can’t finish this without thanking my team. No great person ever accomplished anything alone, and I’ve had a great team and volunteers who have partnered with me on this God given mission to equip young people from underrepresented backgrounds with the resources, networks and mindset to achieve career success. Lastly, I can’t end without thanking the young people we’ve supported and all of the mentors for Bridging Barriers. There’s thousands, so I can’t name you all, but without you, we wouldn’t exist. Thank you for your service. All glory to God, what a start to 2025! Ephesians 3:20! That’s my life! Proverbs 22:29! See the full list here: https://lnkd.in/ex8ZEdq4 P.s - I’ve got a new title now. Kevin Osei BEM - that’s how I’m being addressed now 😎 Jheeze! MBE soon come LOL!

"The kind of perspective that comes from lived experiences can't be learnt, and so when you're casting for roles which have neurodiversity as part of their character, it's really important that those voices are being heard and are actively in the room." Star of Channel 4 detective drama ‘Patience’ Ella Maisy Purvis, highlights why we need lived experience voices behind our cameras too - shaping our dramas. When lived experience voices are omitted from the creative process, storylines risk feeling inauthentic as well as potentially perpetuating harmful stereotypes. Members of our Spokesperson Network have been influencing drama storylines using their experiences & expertise. Read Ella Maisy Purvis’ full interview: https://lnkd.in/erSMkSaV
