NASA just opened a $45 million door for space tech founders. From January, the agency’s writing up to 300 checks for $150,000 each to innovative companies building technologies for moon exploration. It comes ahead of 2026’s Artemis II crewed mission back to the lunar surface. They're looking to SMBs to provide critical technologies for moon exploration. The Opportunity: • ~300 Phase I awards available • $150,000 per Phase I award • Non-dilutive funding • Direct path to NASA contracts • Technical validation from the world's top space agency Key Technology Focus Areas: • Lunar solar arrays • Advanced space suits • Life support systems • In-space and lunar habitats NASA hosted AMA sessions last week breaking down research subtopics helping founders preparing proposals (https://lnkd.in/e3xHGAcd) For successful applicants, it means access to world-class engineering networks, clear paths to government contracts, and positioning at the forefront of space innovation. Not to mention potential follow-on funding up to $850K. NASA needs these technologies ready for deployment within the next few years to support their Moon missions. That means successful recipients aren't just getting grant money - they're potentially becoming key suppliers in humanity's return to lunar soil. It's a rare moment where startup innovation timelines align perfectly with NASA's mission needs. If you're building space tech and want to discuss your proposal strategy, DM me. I'd be glad to share any insights I can.

🇪🇺 🛰️.EU signs $11B deal for a sovereign satellite constellation to rival Starlink. The European Union is forging ahead with plans for a constellation of satellites to rival Starlink, after signing a €10.6 billion($11.1 billion) deal to launch 290 satellites into low- and medium-Earth orbits by 2030. The bloc wants the space tech to boost its digital sovereignty by providing secure comms to governments. Technological advances mean the network of high- and lower-powered satellites will provide the equivalent of 1,000 satellites in a “mega constellation” similar to Starlink. First announced in 2022, Iris² (Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite) is a public-private partnership whose initial cost estimate (€6 billion) leapt 76% . The programme will be 61% funded from the public purse; industry consortium SpaceRISE making up the difference. This grouping includes French satellite giant Eutelsat Group, which merged with OneWeb back in 2022, the latter operating a broadband constellation with more than 630 satellites 🛰️. "Launched by European rockets, the Iris² constellation will promote Europe's autonomy, resilience and competitiveness," said the European Space Agency - ESA). "Iris² builds on the ESA's previous deliveries of constellations for the European Union, including Copernicus, the world's largest Earth observation programme, and Galileo, the world's most accurate civilian satellite navigation system." Contracts were signed in Brussels on Monday (Dec 16th) between ESA, the EU, and the SpaceRISE industrial consortium led by European operators SES Satellites, Eutelsat Group and Hispasat. It comes after Europe's two leading satellite manufacturers - Airbus Defence and Space and Thales Alenia Space pulled out of the SpaceRISE consortium amid concerns over economic risks as they grapple with current losses. Europe's satellite manufacturers are struggling to cope with the arrival of STARLINK, developed by SpaceX, which accounts for some two-thirds of satellites in orbit. They have seen a drop in demand for large satellites. Airbus and Thales Alenia Space, which are exploring plans to combine satellite operations, will remain in the Iris² project as suppliers. Asked if the UK would be involved in the Iris² programme, a senior official said there had been no such request. Before Brexit, the UK was part of an EU space programme, with British armed forces due to have access to the Galileo network next year. The British government severed ties with the programme and concluded during Brexit that it would be in the UK’s interests to develop a rival to Galileo involving two satellites. The UK network includes Tyche, the Earth-imaging military satellite, launched in August. Last month the government said a new satellite, Juno, would be launched in 2027 to “capture daytime images of the Earth’s surface” thereby “strengthening the UK’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance” capabilities. https://lnkd.in/eJz2Bere

Successful mission for TELEO in-orbit demonstrator✅ In collaboration with CNES, this compact ‘orbital laboratory’ - hosted onboard Arabsat’s Airbus-built Badr-8 geostationary satellite - proved that massive, rapid ground to space data transfer is possible. Thanks to this demonstrator, laser communications to and from space are set to reshape the telecoms market, similar to how optical fibre transformed telecoms on ground!
