Case Study: The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust saw the need to integrate virtual into their everyday practice to enable them to run more clinics. They were in need of more clinical rooms, but with the introduction of virtual clinics it reduced the need for new real estate and allowed the repurposing of existing real estate, with quick and hassle-free installation of private modular booths. The Ophthalmology department particularly were looking to run more virtual clinics, either by phone of video call, to increase output and free up larger clinical rooms for when they were needed for face-to-face clinics. Working with the Ophthalmology and Real Estate teams, Spacestor Healthcare came up with a scheme comprising of two different size booth options to meet the different needs within the department. Using the Consult Flex for all the booths provided flexibility and ensured the appropriate size booths were created to allow the best working space for virtual clinics, ensuring focus and productivity. Southampton General Hospital is University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust’s largest location, with a great number of specialist services based here, ranging from neurosciences and oncology to pathology and cardiology. The Urology department were anticipating their clinical space would be adequate for at least the next four to five years. The unit was built in 2019 and they've already outgrown the clinical space. Working with the Transformation team and Urology department, we identified an opportunity to transform existing estate and utilise space more efficiently with modular pods. The pods have allowed the Urology department to expand on phone clinics to support emergency outreach phone services. #HealthcareDesignOfTheWeek is Mercy Health Kings Mills Hospital. The building is shaped like a Y, with the hospital on one arm, MOB on another, and back-of-house staff spaces composing the stem, situated behind the facility. The main entrance sits where the three sections converge, fully fronted in glass with a porte-cochere for easy wayfinding. In keeping with BSMH’s mission, the overall hospital aesthetic is fairly simple. “Outside of the lobby, everything is what I’d call ‘utilitarian chic,’” Ironmonger says. “It’s all done in a very lovely way, but it’s done cost-effectively.” The lobby, however, introduces a little wow factor. “Here, we wanted to make a statement,” Ironmonger adds. With about 4,000 square feet, the double-height lobby is light and airy, benefiting from floor-to-ceiling window walls on both the entrance side and the back wall, where the space overlooks a cozy public courtyard. Dramatic wood-toned fins curve up the walls and along the ceiling, guiding the eye upward in the manner of old cathedrals. Case Study: Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust They began researching into video conferencing pods because they knew that there would be time savings, space efficiencies and productivity to be gained from moving towards a more digital approach, but there were also several concerns to overcome. Clinicians at Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS FT were often having four to six hour sessions, and so user comfort; including ergonomics, lighting, good control over their ventilation, was paramount. Visual and acoustic privacy was also very important to protect the patients privacy and provide a seamless experience. Further enhancing the experience, it was necessary to ensure the correct IT set up of power, microphones, cameras and screens.
