Recently completed an intensive masterclass in "Design Thinking and Innovation in Practice" at the Royal College of Art - Executive Education , in collaboration with Special Projects . Led by Clara Gaggero Westaway and Adrian Westaway, the course encouraged rethinking how to approach frustrations and provided updated tools for Design Thinking frameworks in practical ways. It was also inspiring to work on a real challenge from BookTrust and collaborate with many great people from various disciplines and countries. Grateful to British Council for supporting this professional development opportunity. As part of the program, I hope to use this knowledge to make a positive contribution, though I am still figuring out how best to apply it. If you have any suggestions or ideas, they would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. *2nd & 3rd photos taken by the RCA team. #designthinking #rca #studyUK #designstrategy #innovation

Helping leaders to cut through the noise. Founder, CEO, author, speaker, leadership communications specialist.

It was a joy to spend last week immersed in Saïd Business School, University of Oxford's Strategic Leadership Programme with this fine cohort of leaders. Just a few of my many highlights include: - Chris Kutarna got us thinking about a Technologist's future of abundance where a robot becomes cheaper than educating and training a human being, and urged us to focus on sense making within a changing world - Margaret Heffernan drew our attention to the distinction between Complicated systems (getting through an airport to your plane) versus Complex systems (the impact of weather on flying a plane) and the different ways these systems need to be managed - Clara Gaggero Westaway showed us how deeply focusing on problems can create delightful solutions to our customers' problems, including a marvellous example of how they developed an 'old age friendly' Samsung phone manual - Peter Hanke blew our hearts & minds as we spotted our leadership patterns via conducting a choir at Balliol College - Prof. Paul Smith showed us the very objects at Oxford's Natural History Museum that had led to Darwin's world-changing paradigm shift in the Origin of Species. - Prof. Colin Mayer CBE reframed corporate purpose as "Profitable solutions to the problems of people and planet" - Jon Stokes gave us the psychologist's view on leadership, offering us the resonant equation: Leadership = Direction + Energy - Richard Olivier used Shakespeare's Julius Caesar to teach us the dynamics of power and politics (and just a touch of back-stabbing!), through his exceptional archetypes model. I also learned a huge amount from my outstanding tutor Sue Dopson, plus the other tutors (who I'll mention below) and our most excellent, global cohort of brilliant and insightful leaders: Juan M. Fernandez, Majed Binbattal, Stephen Wackerle, Frank Tracey, Dan Gruia, @Jayaselan K. Navaratnam, Hazem Albalushi حازم البلوشي , Beau Murfitt, Johan Van Neck, Michelle Nolan, Geraldine Mills, Savan Tuysuz, Maarten Haverkamp, Damien Ryan, Maziar Alamouti, Jaber Alsiyadi , @Jamiu Saka, Nazaiful Affendi Zainal Abidin, Mei Ramsay, Hanadi Alsheikh, Mubashar Nazar, CFA, @Azizul Zainol, Anna Starrett, GAICD, Melia Stone, Mercy Maduabuchi (Engr.), Anoud AlGhaith, Hebah Alshamlan, @Fazni Ismail, @Razzaq Abiodun, Pietro Novelli, @Deshnie Naidoo, Laura Maida, Anton Barnett-Harris GAICD, Paulette Leo-Olagbaiye, MBA and Sothearoath Oeur. Such a pleasure and may our learnings bring a huge amount of positive impact to those around us! Massive thanks to Lucy Shaw who pulled together the whole experience and held us so well throughout.

Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to spend two days at the Royal College of Art, diving deep into Design Thinking & Innovation. The course, led by the brilliant Clara Gaggero Westaway and Adrian Westaway from Special Projects, was both inspiring and insightful — I've come away with so much to reflect on and apply! A highlight of the experience was meeting Jeremy Myerson, founder of the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design — an unforgettable moment for anyone passionate about human-centred design. The two days were packed with energy as we tackled some of BookTrust's biggest challenges, collaborating with talented individuals from across the globe. It was an incredible experience to see how diverse perspectives can spark fresh ideas. For anyone curious about sharpening their design thinking skills, I highly recommend checking out this short course.

What happens when you blend magic, technology and human-centered design? I had a super time chatting to Stephen Wood about this on his podcast. 🔗 👉 https://lnkd.in/eTaW4Qhy We talked about how spending extraordinary time and attention on details can create moments of genuine delight - whether you're performing illusions or crafting user experiences, my early adventures stacking shelves in a toy department :) and what can perfume shopping teach us about user experience. #DesignThinking #Innovation #UXDesign

Could it be magic?⁣ ⁣ Service designers fixate on creating moments that matter, but what about moments of magic? In the latest episode of Service Design YAP I talk with Adrian Westaway about how the team at Special Projects weaves techniques from the world of magic into their design work. ⁣ ⁣ The more we explored parallels between magicians and designers, the more we saw commonalities.⁣ ⁣ ①. Magic and design are both human-centric disciplines: they both capitalise on an understanding of psychology to create outcomes. The both work with attitudes, expectations and behaviours to bring about change, or create impact. ⁣ ⁣ ②. Magic and design (at least good magic and good service design) are the products of spending what some may think of as an unreasonable amount of time studying and and orchestrating a specific moment.⁣ ⁣ ③. Magic and design understand that timing is everything. Repeat something and it becomes predictable, gimmicky, it loses its element of surprise and people disengage. Do it at the wrong time and it creates an "urgh", rather that awe. ⁣ Just think of Asana's celebration creatures from Stout Design Inc. ⁣ ④. Magic and design both need extensive preparation for all pathways, not just the predictable "happy path". What may seem like a very simple moment will have taken real effort to set up. Preparation will also have gone into alternative moments that were never discovered. Perhaps a user chose a different path in a journey. Often your moments of magic will go undiscovered for ages, but this just amplifies the awe when they're found.⁣ ⁣ ⑤. Magic and design both strive to find simple solutions. Impact and complexity aren't always linked. Think about your MacBook. The touch bar was soooo not magic, but the Magsafe connector was. ⁣ Thanks for resurrecting it Apple. ⁣ On top of this we talk about:⁣ 🅾 The secrets of running a business with your life-partner.⁣ 🅾 How to do ethnographic research for monsters⁣ 🅾 Cat-fishing stray dogs⁣ 🅾 Burlesque disappointment⁣ ⁣ There's something for everyone. • This year, Special Projects turned 10 years old 🎂 Over the past few months, we have been celebrating 10 amazing years by looking back at some major highlights 💖 In 2022, we worked with Aura Fertility, an award-winning femtech start-up, to structure and design an evidence-based support app that offers pioneering whole-person care, for every IVF cycle. "Working with Special Projects has raised our perception of what's possible, and challenged us to stretch our ambition on UX to build a truly world-class platform. Their work ethic, empathy and attention to detail - as well as their ability to analyse and understand the problem - shaped our project and ultimately the product" - Aura CEO Read more about this project and others on our website through the link below. https://lnkd.in/en2u5pbs #SpecialProjects #10YearsWiser #DesignJourney #FemTech

    • A close-up of hands holding a smartphone displaying the Aura app. The screen shows an article titled 'What is the Trigger Shot?' under the category 'Cognitive' with a 6-minute listening option. Below it, another article titled 'Nutrition Tips to Thicken Your Lining' is visible, categorized as 'Behavioral' with a 6-minute video option. The screen has a minimalist design with colorful, abstract graphics. At the top, 'Aura | 2022' is written in white on the purple background, with 'Special Projects' at the bottom.
    • A quote on a light purple background from the CEO of Aura, expressing appreciation for Special Projects' work on the Aura platform. It reads: 'Working with Special Projects has raised our perception of what's possible, and challenged us to stretch our ambition on UX to build a truly world-class platform. Their work ethic, empathy, and attention to detail – as well as their ability to analyze and understand the problem – shaped our project and ultimately the product.' The quote marks and the CEO's name, 'Aura CEO,' are styled in light beige."
    • A simple logo design on a light purple background, showing a stylized, cursive 'A' accompanied by a heart and a chat bubble with an 'e' inside, representing the Aura app brand.
  • Tune in to the latest episode of Service Design YAP, where our co-founder, Adrian Westaway, chats with Stephen Wood about how we integrate techniques from the world of magic into our design process. ✨🎙️
